Description
Pittsburgh Botanic Garden inspires people to value plants, garden design, and the natural world by cultivating plant collections of the Allegheny Plateau and temperate regions, creating display gardens, conducting educational programs, and conserving the environment.
As part of the Garden's growing team, the Facilities Assistant is responsible for the cleanliness of the Garden's facilities as well as setup and tear-down for Garden events.
Essential Job Functions
  • Clean, stock, and supply assigned facility areas regularly, including dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning glass surfaces, ceiling vents, and restrooms.
  • Perform deeper cleaning tasks and special projects as required to maintain high standards of cleanliness across all facilities.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the custodial closet and cart.
  • Remove trash, recycling, and debris from buildings and designated areas as needed.
  • Set up and tear down tables and chairs for classes and events according to specified layouts.
  • Assist with minor facility maintenance tasks as assigned, including basic maintenance and safety checks, and reporting issues promptly and proactively.
  • Assist with seasonal tasks such as clearing leaves, shoveling snow, and applying ice melt to ensure pathways remain clear and safe.
  • Maintain cleanliness in high-traffic areas during events and special programs.
  • Communicate pleasantly and professionally with colleagues, vendors, and visitors.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Experience in a cleaning role is required
  • Ability to communicate clearly and listen attentively
  • Demonstrated skills in collaboration and creative problem-solving

  • Must be willing to obtain background clearances (Child Abuse Clearance; PA State Police Background Check; FBI Fingerprint Background Check)

Work Conditions

  • Flexible hours will be required for Garden-related functions and occasional holidays, weekdays, and evenings.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 20 pounds repetitively and up to 50 pounds periodically, stand for long periods of time, bend, and squat.
  • Must be able to climb ladders to access hard-to-reach areas.
  • Must be able to walk around the Garden, including paved and unpaved sloped paths.
  • Must be willing to work in all weather conditions.
