ABOUT THE ROLE: INTERN
IRI is creating student partnerships that facilitate professional development while advancing IRI's mission. Interns provide administrative, research, programmatic, and operations support to the institute, gaining hands-on experience in a professional, mission-driven environment while contributing to day-to-day operations and special projects.
This position will start on September 28, 2026, and end on November 20, 2026. This is a paid position, at $18.40 per hour. IRI does not provide housing or relocation. Interns will work 20 hours per week with a flexible Monday through Friday schedule. Interns are expected to work in-office at least two days per week.
This position is located in Washington, DC.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist with researching a variety of topics for briefing papers, program proposals, and reports
  • Assist with preparing reports and presentations
  • Assist staff with program administration and events, including interview coding, translating reports and other documents, logistics, and other tasks as needed
  • Assist with operational and administrative support
  • Support key record keeping functions of the division, including taking minutes at staff meetings and cleaning databases (e.g., contact lists and program inventory)
  • Monitor domestic and international media outlets daily for news on topics assigned
  • Represent IRI at events (e.g., congressional hearings/briefings and think tank events)

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We seek a passionate and experienced individual with:
  • Current student in an undergraduate or graduate program in relevant field of study
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Detail-oriented individual with strong organizational skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively, complete tasks with minimal oversight, and communicate clearly and consistently in a virtual work environment

LEARNING OUTCOMES
  • Acquire knowledge of the democracy and governance field of international development, including aspects related to program management, monitoring and evaluation, program and business development, operations, and external affairs
  • Experience in key project administration skills that employers look for in entry-level candidates
