The Police Cadet Program is intended to provide college students with an introduction to a career in law enforcement.

The San Marino Police Department is comprised of 32 sworn officers and 11.5 civilian staff

San Marino Police Department is led by a Chief of Police, two Bureau Commanders and a Civilian Administrative Manager. Situated 12 miles from the majestic foothill mountains, the beautiful City of San Marino, California, with a population of approximately 13,000 is located northeast of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley. Incorporated in 1913, San Marino is primarily a residential community known for expansive properties surrounded by beautiful gardens, wide streets, well- maintained parkways, and top- performing schools.

A city of 3.75 square miles, the City is home to numerous recreational and cultural opportunities that complement all interests. Residents and visitors enjoy hiking in the foothill mountains, exhibits at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, historical culture and art galleries at the Old Mill (El Molino Viejo), and recreational activities at the historic Lacy Park. GENERAL PURPOSE A San Marino Police Department Police Cadet will possess strong character, empathy for others and a desire to contribute in a positive manner to the community of San Marino. Under direct and general supervision, a Police Cadet will perform a variety of tasks in support of Patrol, Detectives, Communications, and Police Records Section, gaining broad experience in preparation for a career in law enforcement.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is a civilian support position within the Police Department without peace officer powers. A Police Cadet performs a variety of routine and technical tasks in support of sworn police functions. This position is "At Will", which means the police cadet serves at the will of the City Manager or Police Chief and may be removed at any time without cause, notice, or right of appeal.

Duties: Receive reports and complaints from the public at the front counter; completes necessary forms in regard to information received.

Issue and process overnight parking permits. Search case files for information. Operate standard office equipment.

Perform clerical work as required, including the maintenance of file systems. May perform specific duties requested by the Watch Commander in the maintenance of police vehicles and equipment. Assist with a variety of administrative tasks and daily operations.

Support the Police Department's activities and events. Follow City and Department policies, procedures, and rules. Use good judgement and discretion in performing daily tasks and interacting with coworkers and the community.

Maintain confidentiality of records and reports. Communicate clearly and accurately both orally and in writing. Receive and respond to inquiries from the community and give general assistance and direction as appropriate.

Complete routine lobby reports and requests for Live Scan (electronic fingerprinting). Collaborate with fellow cadets and other coworkers, on projects and at events. Attend meetings.

Assist with traffic control, assist at DUI checkpoints, at other field activities, and at Department and City sponsored events. May be required to work various shifts, at night, and on weekends, and may be required to respond off-hours and for emergencies. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily. The following requirements are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of General functions, operations and activities of a police department.

General law enforcement terminology, procedures and practices. City ordinances, codes, procedures and practices regarding law enforcement operations and records management. Various computer systems, protocols and administrative rules regarding access, use and dissemination of data contained in various computer systems.

Customer service practices and telephone etiquette. Standard office procedures and practices. Uses and operations of computers, databases, teletypes and standard business software.

Safety policies and safe work practices applicable to the work. Time management and the importance of reliability. Collaboration and teamwork.

Proper English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic mathematics. Skills/Abilities Understand and follow oral and written instructions Service mindset, respect for and sincere desire to help others with diverse backgrounds and experience. Ability to collaborate, share ideas, and contribute to group projects.

Develop and maintain working relationships. Learn, understand, explain and apply, codes and procedures applicable to a variety of police operations. Prepare clear and accurate police reports, documents, data entries and files.

Honesty, integrity, accountability, and commitment to ethical behavior. Courage to intervene and report unethical behavior to a supervisor. Deal constructively with conflict.

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to the education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to gain such knowledge and abilities would be: Education Graduation from high school or equivalent is required. Current enrollment in at least twelve (12) semester units of college or university course work per semester at an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Communications, Psychology or other related fields, and must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 ("C" grade) for all courses taken

If the Police Cadet fails to maintain a 2.0 minimum grade point average, discontinues education, or drops below the required minimum number of units, the Police Cadet will be released from employment. Minimum age of 18 years and a maximum age of 24 years. Though the Police Cadet position is intended for current college students, an incumbent may continue to be employed in this position for up to 6 months after graduation from college

Experience No experience required. Licenses/Certificates Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license with a satisfactory driving record. Occasionally walk up and down stairs; work closely with others. Work environment Employee generally works 40% outdoors (including time spent in a vehicle) and 60% indoors. While performing the duties of this job outdoors, the employee may be exposed to noise, vibration, extremes in temperature or humidity, dust, and most weather conditions.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but the employee may occasionally be exposed to high level noise including but not limited to emergency vehicle sirens and road traffic. Employee is exposed to emergencies and stressful situations and electrical energy. Due to the unpredictable nature of emergency work, an employee may be assigned to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
