Police Dispatch (part-time, 17.5 hours/week)
The Police Dispatcher uses analytical and critical thinking to help maintain the safety and physical security of the BYU campus community. This position monitors and interprets information from multiple security and life-safety systems, coordinates emergency communications, and provides timely support to law enforcement, emergency responders, and campus personnel. The role requires sound judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.
What you'll do in this position
  • Monitor and analyze security, alarm, access control, and surveillance systems to identify and respond to potential threats
  • Receive and process emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching police, fire, medical, maintenance, and other responders as needed
  • Monitor multiple communication channels and coordinate information between campus departments and external public safety agencies
  • Operate computer-aided dispatch (CAD), security camera, access control, and life-safety systems
  • Maintain accurate records, incident reports, and documentation in accordance with department, state, and federal requirements
  • Assist with investigations by reviewing historical security camera footage and related records
  • Support training efforts and provide guidance on security systems and communications procedures
  • Maintain required certifications and participate in ongoing professional development

What qualifies you for this role
Required
  • Associate degree and two years of public safety dispatch experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • High school diploma or GED
  • No felony convictions and the ability to successfully pass a background investigation and pre-employment screening
  • Ability to obtain required certifications within one year of hire, including Utah POST Dispatch, PowerPhone Total Response (Police, Fire, and Medical), and Utah Criminal Justice Information System (UCJIS)
  • Strong analytical, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during emergency situations
  • Ability to multitask while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn complex public safety technology systems
  • Ability to type a minimum of 50 words per minute

Preferred
  • Five years of police, fire, or medical dispatch experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Experience with CAD systems, Genetec Security Center, C-Cure access control, ONYXWorks, PowerPhone, UCJIS, and public safety radio systems
  • Knowledge of university operations and public safety communications

Pay Grade: 50
Typical Starting Pay: $25.00 to $32.50 an hour
