Job description

JOB TITLE: Golf Course Superintendent
DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation amp; Civic Facilities
DIVISION: Fairview Golf Course
SALARY: Negotiable

Job Summary/Scope
Manages technical work associated with care, maintenance, playing conditions and operation of the golf course. Schedules work of employees, purchases and maintains equipment and purchases supplies.
Supervisory Responsibility
Integral to the position of Superintendent of Golf Course is the responsibility for developing subordinates to their fullest potential by exercising appropriate degrees of coaching, training, guiding, evaluating, correcting and, if necessary, disciplining.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Schedules, revises, and oversees daily seasonal work to include daily setup; mowing of greens, tees, fairways, and all rough areas; watering of greens, tees, fairways, and driving range; maintenance of irrigation system; seeding, aerating, fertilizing, weed and pest control, manicuring of golf course, tree maintenance, landscape areas, and maintaining areas associated with the parking lot.
  • Assists golf course manager in preparation of annual budget, fiscal and quarterly reports, bid specifications and monthly user committee reports
  • Maintains machinery in proper working condition by directing maintenance and controlling operation of mowers, tractors, and other equipment
  • Maintains records for use in preparing employee payroll documents; determines work procedures; prepares work schedules for tasks to be accomplished during all seasons of the year
  • Works with user committee and golf course manager to establishes future goals of golf course and all re-construction of new/existing golf course facilities

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Decides and advises golf course manager when to open and close the golf course based on existence of conditions affecting patron safety or playability of course
  • Responsible for hiring and training all full and part-time employees in relation to the golf maintenance division, and to provide leadership and direction to all employees to complete their daily assignments. Administers educational opportunities for all members of crew to attend
  • Responsible for maintaining data sheets for chemical applications.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Skills in operating equipment used in golf course maintenance practices
  • Knowledge of turf grasses, turf diseases, pesticide and fertilizer applications, and aeration.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems operations and repairs
  • Knowledge of the game of golf and USGA rules/regulations
  • Ability to supervise and organize the work of others and to work independently with a minimum of supervision
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, senior management, patrons, user groups and general public

Material and Equipment Directly Used
Uses a variety of vehicles ranging from trucks, tractors, bobcat, backhoe and related golf course equipment and construction equipment. Hand tools including manual and electric. Tools/machines relating to sharpening reels and mowers. Office equipment such as computer and related software programs, telephone, hand radio, and calculator. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires sitting, speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Education
High school diploma or equivalent. Five years of experience preferred. Associate degree in turf management, recreation management or closes related field preferred or any combination of education and work experience to provide the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities. Pesticide Applicator's license/Ornamental turf and pest control required or ability to acquire within six months of employment.
