How much do part time pcb layout designer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 4, 2026, the average yearly pay for part time pcb layout designer in the United States is $100,705.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $75,500.00 and $120,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some typical challenges faced by part-time PCB layout designers when collaborating with full-time engineering teams?

Part-time PCB layout designers often work remotely or on flexible schedules, which can make it challenging to stay fully aligned with fast-moving engineering teams. Communication gaps can arise due to differing work hours, and accessing up-to-date design files or feedback may require extra coordination. To overcome these challenges, it's important to establish clear expectations for project milestones, leverage collaborative design tools, and schedule regular check-ins with team members. This helps ensure that design revisions and approvals happen smoothly, maintaining project momentum while accommodating part-time availability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time PCB Layout Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time PCB Layout Designer, you need strong knowledge of electronic circuit design, PCB layout principles, and typically a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency in industry-standard PCB design software like Altium Designer, Eagle, or KiCAD is essential, and IPC certification can be valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you collaborate with engineers and ensure design accuracy. These skills and qualifications are crucial for creating reliable, manufacturable PCBs that meet technical and industry standards.

What is the difference between Part Time Pcb Layout Designer vs Full Time Pcb Layout Engineer?

AspectPart Time Pcb Layout DesignerFull Time Pcb Layout Engineer
CredentialsRelevant certifications, CAD software skillsSame as part-time, often with additional experience
Work EnvironmentFlexible, project-based, often remoteOffice or on-site, full-time employment
Industry UsageFreelance or contract roles in electronics manufacturingPermanent roles in electronics or tech companies

The main difference between a Part Time Pcb Layout Designer and a Full Time Pcb Layout Engineer lies in employment status and work hours. The part-time role offers flexibility and project-based work, while the full-time engineer has a permanent position with consistent hours. Both roles require similar skills and certifications, but the work environment and commitment levels differ.

What does a Part Time PCB Layout Designer do?

A Part Time PCB Layout Designer is responsible for designing the physical layout of printed circuit boards (PCBs) based on electronic schematics and project requirements. They use specialized software to arrange components, create wiring paths, and ensure the board meets performance and manufacturability standards. Working part-time, they may collaborate remotely or on-site with engineers and project managers, contributing to various stages of the product development cycle. Their tasks also include checking for design errors, adhering to industry standards, and preparing files for manufacturing.

PCB Hardware Design Engineer, Senior
The Opportunity:
Are you looking for an opportunity to combine your technical skills with big picture thinking to make an impact on national security? You understand how a board-level design decision ripples through an entire system, and you know how to turn a set of requirements into hardware that performs in the field. Your ability to lead a design effort and bring a circuit card from concept through fabrication, bring-up, and qualification makes you an integral part of delivering a customer-focused engineering solution.
As an Electrical Engineer on our team, you will own the circuit board design and layout effort for an advanced defense capability program, working alongside Booz Allen colleagues, other support contractors, and U.S. Navy personnel. You will translate system and subsystem requirements into board-level specifications, lead schematic capture and multilayer PCB layout, and guide designs through signal and power integrity analysis, design reviews, fabrication, assembly, and test. You will set the technical standard for the hardware team, mentor junior engineers, and serve as the design authority the program relies on to deliver reliable electronics on schedule. Grow your skills by merging proven engineering discipline with new technologies to build systems that support the mission.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 8+ years of experience in electrical design and development, including leading printed circuit board (PCB) design and layout efforts
  • Experience with schematic capture and multilayer PCB layout using tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, OrCAD, or Siemens/Mentor Xpedition
  • Experience designing analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits, including component selection and worst-case circuit analysis
  • Experience with high-speed digital design, including signal integrity, power integrity, controlled impedance, and layer stackup definition
  • Experience developing fabrication and assembly packages, including BOMs, Gerber, ODB++ outputs, and assembly drawings in accordance with IPC standards
  • Experience with board bring-up, debug, and validation using lab instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers
  • Experience leading design reviews, defining design standards, and mentoring junior engineers
  • Knowledge of design for manufacturability, testability, and reliability
  • Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience designing high-reliability or ruggedized electronics for harsh or deployed environments
  • Experience with DoD hardware programs and the associated technical review process, including PDR and CDR
  • Experience integrating FPGAs, microcontrollers, or embedded systems at the board level
  • Experience with EMI/EMC design and qualification, including MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-464
  • Experience with environmental design and qualification, including MIL-STD-810
  • Experience with thermal analysis and power delivery design for dense or high-power boards
  • Experience using a Model-Based Systems Engineering or Digital Engineering approach
  • Ability to communicate advanced electrical engineering concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders and translate system-level requirements into board-level specifications and verify designs against them
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • IPC Certified Interconnect Designer (CID) or CID+ certification

Clearance:
Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; Secret clearance is required.
