What does a part time PCB layout designer do?

A Part Time PCB Layout Designer is responsible for designing the physical layout of printed circuit boards (PCBs) based on electronic schematics and project requirements. They use specialized software to arrange components, create wiring paths, and ensure the board meets performance and manufacturability standards. Working part-time, they may collaborate remotely or on-site with engineers and project managers, contributing to various stages of the product development cycle. Their tasks also include checking for design errors, adhering to industry standards, and preparing files for manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time PCB layout designer?

To thrive as a Part Time PCB Layout Designer, you need strong knowledge of electronic circuit design, PCB layout principles, and typically a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency in industry-standard PCB design software like Altium Designer, Eagle, or KiCAD is essential, and IPC certification can be valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you collaborate with engineers and ensure design accuracy. These skills and qualifications are crucial for creating reliable, manufacturable PCBs that meet technical and industry standards.

What are some typical challenges faced by part time PCB layout designers when collaborating with full-time engineering teams?

Part-time PCB layout designers often work remotely or on flexible schedules, which can make it challenging to stay fully aligned with fast-moving engineering teams. Communication gaps can arise due to differing work hours, and accessing up-to-date design files or feedback may require extra coordination. To overcome these challenges, it's important to establish clear expectations for project milestones, leverage collaborative design tools, and schedule regular check-ins with team members. This helps ensure that design revisions and approvals happen smoothly, maintaining project momentum while accommodating part-time availability.

What is the difference between Part Time Pcb Layout Designer vs Full Time Pcb Layout Engineer?

AspectPart Time Pcb Layout DesignerFull Time Pcb Layout Engineer
CredentialsRelevant certifications, CAD software skillsSame as part-time, often with additional experience
Work EnvironmentFlexible, project-based, often remoteOffice or on-site, full-time employment
Industry UsageFreelance or contract roles in electronics manufacturingPermanent roles in electronics or tech companies

The main difference between a Part Time Pcb Layout Designer and a Full Time Pcb Layout Engineer lies in employment status and work hours. The part-time role offers flexibility and project-based work, while the full-time engineer has a permanent position with consistent hours. Both roles require similar skills and certifications, but the work environment and commitment levels differ.

Job description

About the Role:

You will work within a small team of dedicated engineers responsible for the design of Planet's satellites. This is not your typical aerospace or consumer electronics role. You will work designing printed circuit board assemblies optimized for medium-scale mass production.ย  You will design and optimize electrical power, data handling, and sensor interfacing systems, both within the spacecraft and on ground support equipment.ย  You will be responsible for complex high-speed digital, analog, RF and Microwave PCB/PCBA designs and interfacing with electrical design engineers to make sure that board meets their design requirements.ย  You will work with board manufacturers to ensure they are fabricating and assembling a quality product.ย  Your work will then be put in a rocket and shot into space.ย

This is a full-time, hybrid role which will require you to work from our San Francisco office 3 days per week.

Impact You'll Own:

  • Design layout of RF/Microwave, power, microprocessor, high-speed interface, and mixed-signal Printed Circuit Boards for satellite applications in concert with the electrical design engineers
  • Collaborate with electrical design engineers and supply chain to manage PCB design in Altium environment and the integration with the configuration control, inventory, and manufacturing system
  • Coordinate with vendors to ensure on-time delivery of high-quality, high-reliability PCB Assemblies that meet IPC standards
  • Generate fabrication and assembly packages, including drawings, and management of design and drawing templates
  • Create parts entries, including footprints and schematic symbols, for the Altium database parts library
  • Manage the Altium parts library
  • Partner with electrical design engineers to manage subcontractors performing PCB layouts of their designs and reviewing their outputs
  • Select PCB material and fabrication processes

What You Bring:

  • 5+ years experience in PCB layout design
  • Experience with Altium Designer
  • Experience implementing and enforcing IPC standards for PCB design, fabrication, and assembly
