Job description

Sets up and operates equipment for special procedure x-rays; positions patients for examinations; assists physician as scrub technologist; performs sterile procedures. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior.Works under the administrative and technical supervision of a departmental director or designee and the medical supervision of Cardiologist who check work for conformance to established standards. May exercise working supervision over employees of a lower level assigned to the Cath Lab.

  • High School graduate and/or GED Equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognized education program in Diagnostic Radiology.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a cath lab as a Registered Radiologic Technologist performing diagnostic cardiac catheterization procedures including scrubbing and sterile techniques or performing special (interventional) procedures.
  • Working knowledge of methods and techniques of cardiac catheterization and interventional cardiology.
  • Working knowledge of special procedures with emphasis on cardiac, pulmonary, urological anatomy and physiology, ECG rhythms, cardiac hemodynamics, and cardiac medications.
  • Working knowledge of effective methods and techniques in administering special procedure x-rays, of the hazards involved for patients and operators, and associated precautionary measures.
  • Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with patients, physicians, other Medical Center staff, and the general public.
  • Must obtain BLS certificatin upon start of position and must maintain certification per AHA guidelines.
  • NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATION:
  • Registration as an Invasive Cardiovascular Technologist by the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) or CCI (Cardiovascular Credentialing International) as a Registered Cardiovascular Interventional Specialist (RCIS).
  • Registration by the ARRT as a Radiologic Technologist.
  • NOTE: Incumbents must maintain registrations and certifications throughout employment.
    1. Schedules and prepares patients for special procedures. Assesses patient anxiety. Explains procedures, answers questions, and provides comfort and support.

    2. Reviews chart for history of CHF, valve disease, cardiac events, allergies, or other conditions which may jeopardize patient during procedures. Communicates useful information to cardiologist.

    3. Sets up and operates equipment for x-rays. Takes and develops special procedure x-rays. Prepares and files x-ray envelopes and records.

    4. Performs special examinations; e.g., cardiac angiograms, pacemaker insertions, P.T.C.A.'s, pressure lines, I.A.B.P. insertions, pulmonary angiographies.

    5. Monitors, assesses, and charts patient parameters and condition. Takes necessary appropriate action when any onset of or symptom/condition which may jeopardize patient arises.

    6. Administers and monitors patient reactions to intravenous media procedures.

    7. Operates computerized equipment. Requisitions and maintains adequate level of drugs and supplies for examination room. Assists in cleaning special procedure room(s) and equipment. Makes simple repairs as necessary.

    8. Assists in orientation of newly hired departmental personnel. Supervises and instructs students in special procedure techniques.

    9. Performs all scrub assistant-related duties to assist physician.

    10. Manually calculates ejection fractions from cine film.

    11. May perform work of Registered Diagnostic Technologist.

    12. Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react competently, and treat (if appropriate) unique needs of patient age groups served.

    13. Performs other related duties as required, including new improvements and/or technology that relate to job assignment.
