What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Offshore Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Offshore Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in structural engineering, offshore design codes, and a relevant engineering degree, often with professional registration (e.g., PE or Chartered Engineer). Familiarity with industry-standard software such as SACS, STAAD.Pro, and AutoCAD, as well as knowledge of offshore standards like API and DNV, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are soft skills that help manage complex projects and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure that offshore structures are safe, compliant, and efficiently designed, even within part-time or project-based roles.

What is the difference between Part Time Offshore Structural Engineer vs Part Time Civil Structural Engineer?

AspectPart Time Offshore Structural EngineerPart Time Civil Structural Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, offshore certificationsEngineering degree, civil engineering licenses
Work EnvironmentOffshore platforms, marine sitesBuildings, bridges, infrastructure
Industry UsageOil & gas, renewable energyConstruction, urban development

While both roles require engineering degrees and structural expertise, the Part Time Offshore Structural Engineer specializes in offshore projects and marine environments, whereas the Part Time Civil Structural Engineer focuses on land-based infrastructure. The offshore role involves working in marine settings, often with specialized offshore certifications, while the civil role is centered on terrestrial construction projects. Their work environments and industry applications differ, but both share core structural engineering skills.

What types of projects and collaboration can a Part Time Offshore Structural Engineer expect, and how does part-time work affect involvement in project phases?

As a Part Time Offshore Structural Engineer, you’ll often work on specific segments of larger projects, such as structural analysis, design reviews, or overseeing compliance with safety regulations. Collaboration is typically remote, with frequent coordination via digital platforms with multidisciplinary teams including marine engineers, project managers, and drafters. While part-time roles may limit involvement in every project phase, clear communication and defined deliverables help ensure your expertise contributes meaningfully. Flexibility in hours can be a benefit, but staying proactive in team updates and documentation is key to maintaining seamless project progress.

What is a Part Time Offshore Structural Engineer?

A Part Time Offshore Structural Engineer is a professional who designs, analyzes, and oversees the structural integrity of offshore structures such as oil rigs, platforms, and wind turbines, but works on a part-time basis. Their responsibilities include ensuring that these structures can withstand harsh marine environments, conducting safety assessments, and participating in maintenance planning. Working part time allows for flexible hours while still contributing specialized engineering skills to offshore projects. This position typically requires a background in civil or structural engineering and familiarity with offshore industry standards.

Role description:
Arcadis is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to play a key role in the delivery of complex water, wastewater, and resiliency infrastructure projects. This position offers the opportunity to lead the structural design of critical public infrastructure, including treatment facilities, pump stations, flood protection systems, and associated facilities.
You will work on a diverse portfolio of projects involving reinforced concrete and steel structures, including process tanks, retaining structures, foundations, floodwalls, flood hardening systems, equipment platforms, pipe supports/pipe bridges, and treatment facility support structures including low-rise concrete, masonry, and steel buildings. This role provides both technical leadership and project impact, supporting major regional and national projects.
Role accountabilities:
You will manage the structural scope for projects, including planning, budgeting, and execution, contributing directly to successful project delivery. You will mentor junior engineers, provide technical leadership, assist with design and detailed document production, be responsible for project quality and help strengthen the capabilities of the structural team.
You will also work directly with clients and project stakeholders, supporting project execution and contributing to proposals and technical approaches for, and design of, projects. This includes participation in, and design of, projects related to flood resilience, new treatment plants, treatment plant upgrades, and structural rehabilitation projects.
A key aspect of this role is applying a strong understanding of construction methods and constructability, ensuring designs are practical, efficient and constructible. You will evaluate existing structures, develop repair and strengthening solutions, and coordinate with contractors to address real-world construction constraints-particularly for treatment facilities, floodwalls, and heavy structural systems such as pipe racks and equipment platforms.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • 10 years of structural engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience in the design of reinforced concrete, structural steel, and masonry systems.
  • Experience with design of water and/or wastewater facility structures, flood protection systems, and infrastructure project
  • Experience performing structural condition assessments and developing rehabilitation/repair design
  • Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Structural Engineer (SE) license
  • OSHA 10 HR Training
