What do part time nurses do?

Part-time nurses are part of the largest health care profession in the United States. Nursing has many specialties--from geriatrics and palliative nursing to working in the NICU with newborns. Part-time nurses help prepare patients for surgeries and treatments, administer medications, and assist surgeons and doctors with procedures and daily tasks. When working in a hospital or other health care facility, they must follow strict protocols when handling patient care and coordinating with staff members and doctors. Nurses also educate patients by sharing their knowledge about lifestyle and health changes. Part-time nurses have the same job duties as full-time nurses; the primary difference is that part-time nurses work less than thirty hours a week instead of forty or more hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time nurse, and why are they important?

To excel as a Part Time Nurse, you need a nursing degree, valid licensure (RN or LPN/LVN), and strong clinical and time management skills. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), medication administration systems, and basic medical equipment is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and the ability to quickly build rapport with patients and team members are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure that part-time nurses can provide high-quality, consistent care and integrate smoothly into various healthcare settings despite working limited hours.

How do part time nurses typically balance multiple job responsibilities and shifts across different healthcare settings?

Part-time nurses often manage a flexible but varied schedule, which can involve working in different departments or even at multiple healthcare facilities. This requires strong time-management and organizational skills to ensure all responsibilities are met, such as patient care, documentation, and communication with other healthcare professionals. Collaboration is key, as part-time nurses must quickly adapt to different team dynamics and protocols. Many employers support part-time staff by providing clear shift schedules and opportunities for training, making it possible to maintain a healthy work-life balance while gaining diverse experience.

Job description

Part-Time Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) – Vein & Vascular Clinic
Part-Time to Start | Opportunity to Grow into Full-Time

Location: La Jolla, CA
Schedule: Part-Time (2–3 days/week to start) with opportunity to expand to full-time.

Join San Diego's #1 Vein Clinic

La Jolla Vein & Vascular is expanding and seeking a motivated Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant who is passionate about delivering exceptional, patient-centered care. This is an outstanding opportunity to join one of Southern California's premier outpatient vein centers and become part of a highly collaborative specialized team.

Unlike many specialties, venous disease management offers the opportunity to build meaningful, long-term relationships with patients. Our providers guide patients from their initial consultation through diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing follow-up, helping them achieve lasting improvements in vascular health, comfort, and quality of life. Previous vein experience is not required. We welcome providers from surgical, procedural, dermatology, cardiology, vascular, emergency medicine, or primary care backgrounds who are eager to develop expertise in venous and lymphatic medicine. We are committed to training the right candidate.

What You'll Do

Initially, your clinical responsibilities will focus on:

  • Conducting new patient consultations and follow-up visits
  • Developing individualized treatment plans for venous disease (per established protocols)
  • Review venous ultrasound studies (training provided)
  • Educate patients about treatment options and post-procedure care
  • Performing preoperative evaluations
  • Collaborating with our physicians and vascular laboratory team to provide comprehensive outpatient care
  • Building long-term relationships with patients throughout their treatment journey

Professional Growth Opportunity

This position is designed to build a strong clinical foundation in outpatient vascular medicine through consultations, diagnostic evaluation, ultrasound interpretation, treatment planning, and perioperative care. As experience, confidence, and practice needs evolve, providers may have the opportunity to gain hands-on procedural training and expand their clinical responsibilities.

If you're looking for a specialty practice where you can develop advanced expertise, build lasting patient relationships, and grow alongside a nationally recognized vascular team, we'd love to hear from you.

Why This Role Is Unique

  • Part-time position with a clear pathway to full-time employment
  • Outpatient practice with no hospital call, weekends, or nights
  • Opportunity to build long-term specialty expertise in venous disease
  • Collaborative, physician-led practice with exceptional mentorship
  • Develop advanced skills in venous ultrasound interpretation and vascular medicine
  • Longitudinal patient care with the ability to follow patients throughout their treatment journey
  • Future opportunity to expand into hands-on procedural experience as the practice grows and clinical proficiency develops

La Jolla Vein & Vascular is an award-winning vein center recognized for clinical excellence and exceptional patient care. We are proud to be the only vein center in the region offering the full spectrum of minimally invasive endovenous treatment options for venous reflux, allowing us to provide truly individualized treatment for every patient. Our commitment to outstanding patient outcomes is reflected in our consistently high patient satisfaction and hundreds of five-star reviews. As a member of our team, you'll join a practice known for innovation, compassion, and excellence in vascular care.

Ideal Candidate

  • Licensed Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) in CA
  • Surgical, interventional, dermatology, emergency medicine, or vascular experience is helpful but not required
  • Strong patient communication skills and attention to detail
  • Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong collaborator
  • Can keep up with fast paced environment

Compensation & Growth

  • Competitive compensation based on experience
  • Opportunity for productivity incentives
  • Potential to grow into a full-time role as the practice expands

Schedule

  • Opportunity to expand to full-time
