What We Look For In a Technical Writing Tutor

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of technical document design, audience analysis, information architecture, instructional writing, report formatting, proposal construction, usability testing documentation, and visual communication integration. Ability to explain clarity principles, active voice usage, document formatting standards, and writing for specialized audiences while preparing students for careers in technical communication and professional writing.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching document planning, audience-centered writing, and visual-textual integration. Guides students through writing user manuals, standard operating procedures, technical reports, proposals, and online help documentation. Emphasizes clarity, conciseness, and accuracy in conveying complex information and connects technical writing to software development, engineering, healthcare, and scientific communication applications.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with technical writing curricula and common challenges such as adapting writing for non-expert audiences, structuring complex information logically, and integrating visuals effectively. Adapts instruction using real-world document projects, peer usability testing, and style guide adherence exercises to support undergraduate students and professionals developing technical communication skills across STEM and business fields.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
