Job description

Writing Support Specialist (Part-Time)
Mount Mercy University is seeking a part-time Writing Support Specialist to join the Academic Coaching & Enrichment Center (ACE). This position plays a vital role in supporting undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students by providing writing assistance, literacy development, and academic success programming across the university network.
Schedule: 25 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. This position is based in Cedar Rapids with remote support provided to other campuses. Flexible daytime and evening availability is required.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and lead academic writing support initiatives based on current trends and best practices.
  • Provide individual writing and English language literacy support to undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students through in-person and virtual appointments.
  • Teach 1-2 sections of academic writing support courses (1-credit) as assigned.
  • Collaborate with faculty to deliver classroom presentations, workshops, and writing resources.
  • Create writing workshops, citation guides, instructional materials, and online resources for students and faculty.
  • Assist with the hiring, training, and supervision of Peer Educator Writing Tutors across campuses.
  • Provide outreach and training to writing tutors on the St. Ambrose University Davenport campus.
  • Support a welcoming and positive learning environment for students, visitors, and prospective students.
  • Represent academic support programs at campus events, registration days, visit days, and outreach activities.
  • Demonstrate effective communication, organization, and time management skills.

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Strong background in writing instruction, writing consultation, or literacy development.
  • Experience supporting diverse learners, including English language learners and students requiring academic support.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty and campus partners.
  • Commitment to student success, retention, and inclusive educational practices.

  • Master's degree in English, Writing, Education, Student Affairs, or a related field.
