Department Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the intellectual hub of the University of Oregon, serving nearly two-thirds of all students. Home to more than 800 faculty across 50+ departments and programs in the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, CAS is a dynamic and interdisciplinary academic community. Our faculty and advisors work closely with students to develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and clear communication skills to address real-world challenges. CAS staff and managers are integral to this work, playing vital roles in supporting academic excellence and advancing the mission of both the College and the University.
The InfoGraphics Lab is a hybrid research and practice center within the College of Arts and Sciences that for 35 years has been a recognized leader in cartographic design, dynamic mapping, mobile application development, spatial data analysis, visualization, and GIS. The Lab conducts interdisciplinary collaborative projects with research partners on campus at the UO, with state agencies, and other universities. Consisting of 10-15 employees including faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students, the Lab prides itself on providing experiential learning opportunities to students who contribute to real-world projects that make a positive impact on science and humanity.

Position Summary

The University of Oregon InfoGraphics Lab seeks to establish a pool of qualified candidates for Pro Tem Research positions. Pro Tem Researchers in the InfoGraphics Lab contribute to interdisciplinary research at the intersection of cartography, data visualization, and spatial analysis. Research projects examine questions related to space and place across the environmental sciences, social sciences, and humanities, producing scholarly and public-facing visualizations that advance research and science communication. Examples of current and past projects can be found at http://infographics.uoregon.edu/.
Research positions are funding contingent, part-time, limited duration appointments, potentially renewable for up to a total of three years, based on programmatic need, funding, and performance. Screening of applications will take place as positions become available and continue until positions are filled.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for Research Assistant (Type B):
Bachelor's degree in spatial or design field
Two (2) years' professional experience working with geospatial and/or design technologies
To qualify for Research Assistant (Type C):
Master's degree in spatial or design field
To qualify for Research Associate or Postdoctoral Scholar:
Ph.D in spatial, design, or related field

Professional Competencies

Strong background in design, cartography, data visualization, data wrangling, GIS, programming, and/or web development.
Ability to think creatively, solve problems, and work well in a diverse, collaborative setting.
Ability to use software programs that support this work such as Esri's ArcGIS suite, Adobe Creative suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), R, and/or Python.
Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
Ability to contribute to institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Esri's ArcGIS suite, Adobe Creative suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), R, Python, and other software is highly desired.
Previous experience in web programming, HTML, CSS, D3, Leaflet, Mapbox.
Research and teaching experience.
Strong interest in contributing to the development of the Lab's mission.
