What is a part time mother baby RN?

Part-time Mother Baby RNs are registered nurses who provide care to both mothers and their newborns, usually during the postpartum period, but work less than a full-time schedule. They monitor the health and recovery of mothers after childbirth and ensure newborns are stable and healthy, assisting with feeding, education, and bonding. Working part-time allows these nurses to maintain a flexible schedule while still playing a key role in maternal and infant care, often in hospitals or birthing centers.

What are common challenges faced by part time mother baby RNs, and how can they manage their workload within limited hours?

Part-time Mother-Baby RNs often face the challenge of balancing patient care responsibilities within shorter shifts, which can make it more difficult to stay updated on patient status and unit changes. Effective communication during handoffs and thorough documentation are essential to ensure continuity of care. Staying organized and prioritizing tasks—such as newborn assessments, patient education, and supporting breastfeeding—helps manage time efficiently. Building strong relationships with full-time team members can also foster better collaboration and support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time mother baby RN?

To thrive as a Part Time Mother Baby RN, you need a current RN license, experience in postpartum and neonatal care, and strong clinical assessment skills. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, fetal monitoring equipment, and basic life support (BLS) certification are typically required. Compassion, attention to detail, and effective communication with families and multidisciplinary teams are standout soft skills in this role. These qualifications and abilities are crucial to ensuring the safety, comfort, and positive outcomes for both mothers and newborns in a dynamic care environment.

  • Provide one-to-one, in-home nursing care to clients across Oahu according to each client's Plan of Care.

  • Maintain accurate electronic documentation and deliver patient and family-centered care.

Job description

One-on-one nursing. Real support. A schedule you control.
BrightStar Care of Honolulu is hiring PRN Registered Nurses to provide one-to-one, in-home care across Oahu. You choose your availability, we match you with cases that fit. Weekly pay, 24/7 clinical backup, and a local team that actually knows your name.
If your calling is caring for others, come work for a Joint Commission Accredited, kamaʻāina-owned company that lives its Hoku'alohi Promise: to provide the kind of care we would want for our own loved ones, to be compassionate, empathetic, patient, and kind while delivering top-quality professional home care.
No OASIS. No Medicare charting. Clean electronic documentation through a straightforward visit-based workflow.
Is this role right for you?
PRN work at BSCH is variable by design. . Most of our PRN nurses work between 3 and 16 hours per week, and the number moves based on client census and case needs. As our skilled nursing division grows, so will the hours.
This works well for nurses who want supplemental income, are between roles, work part-time elsewhere, or want to stay clinically active on their own terms.
This is not a fit if you need a guaranteed weekly minimum. If you require a set number of hours every week, we would rather tell you now than have you find out after onboarding.
COMPENSATION
  • $50.00/hr base rate for continuous and hourly skilled care
  • Higher case rates available for many hourly skilled-care assignments
  • $75.00 flat rate for initial assessments and home safety assessments
  • $50.00 flat rate for reassessments and recertifications
  • $40.00/hr for orientation and shadow shifts
  • Weekly pay with direct deposit
  • Mileage reimbursement between clients at the prevailing IRS rate

WHAT OUR NURSES SAY
"They had an available case that really worked with what I was looking for. It also worked with my schedule, and I got the impression that they have a higher standard of care here." - Grace, RN
"They are passionate about truly caring for the whole family." - Danielle, RN
"Their staff and management are very well informed and respectful to me." - Jung, RN
WHY NURSES CHOOSE BRIGHTSTAR CARE OF HONOLULU
  • Flexible scheduling, you choose your own availability
  • One-to-one patient care, no ratios and no shortcuts
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Free continuing education and training
  • 24/7 local office and clinical support from our Director of Nursing
  • Electronic documentation and GPS-verified time tracking
  • PTO eligibility after averaging 25+ hours per week for 6 months
  • Culture of respect, gratitude, and growth

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Deliver thoughtful, evidence-based care according to each client's Plan of Care
  • Monitor and document changes in client condition
  • Communicate proactively with families, the care team, and the Director of Nursing
  • Maintain accurate electronic documentation
  • Provide exceptional patient and family-centered care

REQUIREMENTS
  • Current, unrestricted Hawaii RN license
  • BLS certification
  • Negative 2 Step TB test or clear chest X-ray
  • At least 1 year of nursing experience (home health preferred)
