Position Summary
The Part-time Meter Reader is under the general supervision of the Utilities Fiscal Manager (reports directly to a supervisor as assigned), reads between 200 and 500 water meters daily over a pre-determined route. Ensures the accuracy of readings entered into a handheld smart phone device. Occasionally interacts with customers to gain access to their premises and answers questions as required. Performs minor water meter maintenance tasks. Reports abnormal or suspicious meter conditions or usage patterns to Manager or Service Technician. The ideal candidate will be cross-functional, performing fieldwork to assist the full-time meter readers and providing general office support to the billing team (entry-level office skills preferred).
Note: The scheduled shift is Tuesday - Friday, 7:30am to 3:30pm; 58 hours bi-weekly. (This is the preferred part-time meter reader schedule, but is flexible.)
Essential Functions
  1. Walks along a predetermined route of varying length (typically two - five miles per day). Requires driving to various locations.
  2. Locates water meters on an assigned route and records water meter reading, both analog, digital and FM readings, on a handheld smart phone device.
  3. Checks to see that the meters are functioning properly and reports broken glass, lids and other meter defects.
  4. Checks consistency of meter readings and reports unusual cases.
  5. Cleans out flooded and buried meters.
  6. Cleans meter areas and replaces broken and malfunctioning meter boxes and meter box lids.
  7. Conducts rereads of meters as required.
  8. Distributes door-hanger notices.
  9. Access, enter and retrieve information from various computer applications while maintaining a high level of quality control.
  10. May assist with read audits, and other light data entry related to recording meter replacements, work orders, and completes associated paperwork.
  11. Assist with special projects as assigned.
  12. Regular in-person attendance, since face-to-face interaction and coordination of work with other employees, outside colleagues, residents, or vendors, and all immediate access to documents or other information located only in the workplace is require

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Graduate or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Some clerical or utilities work experience preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data collection tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills for reporting findings and collaborating with team members.

Supplemental Information
This position is considered "at-risk" for exposure to Hepatitis B during performance of regular duties. An acceptance/declination of vaccination form is required.
