What does a part time medical scribe do?

As a part-time medical scribe, your job is to follow a physician and record notes from an examination or procedure. In this role, you may update the personal chart of each patient, document conversations and decisions, enter recorded information into a database, and help improve the flow of patients through the facility. You may also act as a personal assistant for one or more physicians, with additional tasks including jobs like making calls, fetching tools, or assisting with certain procedures. Many part-time medical scribes are also medical students and use this job to gain experience. In this context, part-time can mean working after school, at night, or on the weekends.

Are part time medical scribes still in demand?

Part time medical scribes remain in demand due to ongoing needs for accurate medical documentation and electronic health record management. Healthcare providers often seek flexible staffing options, and scribes with medical knowledge and familiarity with EHR systems are valued in clinical settings.

Is it hard to get hired as a part time medical scribe?

Getting hired as a part-time medical scribe typically depends on relevant skills such as strong typing, medical terminology knowledge, and attention to detail. Many employers prefer candidates with some healthcare or transcription experience, and the application process often involves an interview and skills assessment. Competition can vary by location and employer demand, but overall, the role is accessible to those with appropriate qualifications.

What are some common challenges faced by part time medical scribes, and how can they be overcome?

Part-time medical scribes often face challenges such as quickly adapting to various providers' documentation styles and managing a fast-paced workflow with limited hours. Many scribes find that becoming comfortable with electronic health record (EHR) systems and establishing good working relationships with their medical teams supports both job success and long-term growth.

However, many positions require on-site presence to accurately document patient encounters and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations. They work fewer hours than full-time scribes, often accommodating students or individuals seeking flexible schedules. Their primary role is to improve the efficiency of healthcare providers by handling documentation, allowing clinicians to focus more on patient care. Part time medical scribes may work in various settings, including hospitals, clinics, and emergency departments. The position often serves as valuable exposure to the healthcare field for those interested in medical careers.

Veterinary medicine shouldn't come at the expense of your wellbeing. At IndeVets, it won't. We've reimagined what it means to be an associate veterinarian by replacing rigid contracts with sustainable career paths, putting you in control of your schedule and guaranteeing your income, backed by hands-on support and a trusted community. Whether you want to work one day a week or five, you choose the days that work for you while receiving a biweekly salary, benefits, and dedicated scheduling support - so your career finally works for your life, not the other way around.
How It Works
As a part-time W-2 veterinarian in the Riverside area, working 1-3 days per week, you'll earn a guaranteed salary with a schedule you control by choosing the days you want to work. Your schedule is built in advance around those preferences by a dedicated scheduling coordinator, giving you the predictability to plan your life outside the clinic with confidence. We handle scheduling, logistics, and coordination, so you can focus on practicing medicine.
You'll have a guaranteed salary as your foundation, with the option to earn even more by picking up additional shifts when it works for you. Extra shifts can be paid out or converted into additional PTO, giving you flexibility in how you're rewarded.
You'll practice across a variety of trusted hospital settings in Riverside, CA, gaining diverse clinical experience while maintaining the consistency, support, and stability of a single employer. Interested in surgery, dentistry, ER, or urgent care? We'll work to include those types of shifts in your schedule when possible.
No searching for shifts. No rebuilding your schedule each week. Just a structured, sustainable way to stay connected to the work you love.
Practice Medicine Your Way
  • No production quotas
  • No negative accrual
  • No restrictive non-competes
  • Clinical autonomy with a focus on patient care-not numbers

You practice independently - but you're never on your own. You'll have dedicated medical leadership and mentorship behind you every step of the way, plus a collaborative community of fellow veterinarians who genuinely get what you're going through. And when life gets heavy, you'll have something most employers don't offer: access to a veterinary social worker. Add in ongoing CE and professional development opportunities, and this is the kind of support system that actually helps you grow - and stay.
A Career That Grows With You
  • Leadership and mentorship opportunities
  • Exposure to diverse clinical settings
  • Flexibility to evolve your schedule over time
  • A model designed to prevent burnout-not cause it

Compensation & Benefits (Part-time, 1, 2, or 3 days/week)

  • Active license in CA (or ability to obtain)
  • DEA + controlled substance license (as applicable)
  • 1+ year of clinical experience in a small animal setting
  • Confidence practicing independently
