As a part-time medical scribe, your job is to follow a physician and record notes from an examination or procedure. In this role, you may update the personal chart of each patient, document conversations and decisions, enter recorded information into a database, and help improve the flow of patients through the facility. You may also act as a personal assistant for one or more physicians, with additional tasks including jobs like making calls, fetching tools, or assisting with certain procedures. Many part-time medical scribes are also medical students and use this job to gain experience. In this context, part-time can mean working after school, at night, or on the weekends.
| Aspect | Part Time Medical Scribe | Medical Assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | High school diploma; medical terminology knowledge; optional certification | High school diploma or equivalent; certification often preferred |
| Work Environment | Hospitals, clinics, physician offices; primarily clerical | Clinics, hospitals; clinical and administrative tasks |
| Job Responsibilities | Documenting patient encounters in real-time; assisting with record accuracy | Taking vital signs, preparing patients, administrative duties |
| Industry Usage | Commonly used in healthcare settings to support physicians | Widely used in outpatient and inpatient settings for patient care |
While both roles support healthcare operations, a Part Time Medical Scribe primarily focuses on real-time documentation during patient visits, whereas a Medical Assistant handles clinical tasks and patient care. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job opportunity in healthcare.
