Description
RESIDENCY: Candidates must have been legal residents of the following jurisdiction(s):

The work involves responsibility for maintaining high standards of professional nursing services at the Livingston County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, with an emphasis on geriatric and rehabilitative care. This class is distinguished from that of Registered Professional Nurse ("RN") by the added supervisory responsibilities or by independent responsibility for duties of advanced difficulty. An employee in this class has charge of the professional and non-professional personnel assigned to a shift in order to meet the total needs of the resident/patient. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Nursing Service and Assistant Director of Nursing with latitude allowed for instructing, planning, and making assignments to subordinates. A Charge Nurse does related work as assigned.
Examples of Duties
  • Responsible for the total nursing care of all residents/patients during assigned tour of duty;
  • Observes condition of residents/patients and records any mental and physical changes or supervises RNs performing such duties;
  • Supervises RNs in assessing nursing care needs and in carrying out a nursing care plan;
  • Conducts and attends related meetings;
  • Coordinates RN staffing and acts as a consultant to facility staffing personnel;
  • Collaborates with medical staff in care and treatment of residents/patients;
  • Instructs and assists RNs, Licensed Practical Nurses, and auxiliary personnel on nursing problems, neighborhood management, and related activities;
  • Assures adequate follow-up of personnel issues and staffing plan issues;
  • Coordinates transportation, personnel, and outside appointments;
  • Supervises the activities of professional subordinates in the bedside care of residents/patients and the administration of medications and treatments;
  • Maintains accurate and descriptive records of the medical treatment and nursing care of residents/patients;
  • Acts as liaison to interdisciplinary team members, department heads, physicians, community services, and hospital personnel;
  • Coordinates intershift and interdisciplinary report process;
  • May also perform in-service, quality assurance, neighborhood manager, infection control, new hire coordinator duties as needed; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of nursing principles and techniques and their relation to medical and surgical practices and skills and their application to geriatrics; good knowledge of infirmary dietetics, sanitation, and personal hygiene; good knowledge of neighborhood management; good customer service skills; good organizational skills; good supervisory skills; ability to maintain an appropriate level of discretion and confidentiality; ability to get along well with subordinates and peers and to secure their cooperation; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to understand, follow, and carry out technical oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to keep accurate, clear, legible records and make reports; ability to organize tasks and work efficiently; ability to lift, reach, bend, etc.; ability to plan, direct, supervise, and accept responsibility for the work of others; ability to train and supervise employees; ability to secure the cooperation of others; ability to understand and empathize with the needs and concerns of others; good observation; good judgment; mental alertness; thoroughness; patience; sympathetic attitude toward the sick and elderly; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Applicants must meet all requirements for one of the following qualification options in order to be approved for examination and/or appointment:Qualification Option #12Training/Education
  • Possession of a Bachelor's,degree in nursing.
  • Possession of an Associate's(2) degree in nursing.
General experience
  • One (1) year of full-time, paid experience as a Registered Professional Nurse in a long-term or acute care setting; OR
  • Two (2) years of full-time, paid experience in any healthcare setting as a Registered Professional Nurse.
  • Three (3) years of full-time, paid experience as a Registered Professional Nurse in a long-term or acute care setting; OR
  • Four (4) years of full-time, paid experience in any healthcare setting as a Registered Professional Nurse.
Supervisory experience
  • N.A.
License/Certification
  • Licensed by New York State to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.
