POSITION SUMMARY:

The Lifeguard supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This part-time position supports the Aquatics team by providing a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas. Provides excellent service to members, guests, and program participants.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Maintains active surveillance of the pool area. Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.

Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA 

   policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.

Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. 

Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.

Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.

Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action. Checks and records water temperature.

Provides swim tests to members.

Attend monthly in-services.

Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.

Attend all staff meetings and in-service training.

Give schedule availability up to 6 months in advance notice for time off requests for each new scheduling period. 

Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations. Obtain and maintain required training(s).

Demonstrates knowledge of American red cross training materials and can perform rescues to American red cross standards. 

Retains knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for medical or

  traumatic emergencies until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum age of 15 years.

American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, including CPR Pro and First Aid.

Must demonstrate the ability to pass the basic lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards. 

Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to remain calm during high-stress situations. Must be able to speak clearly when talking with emergency response 

  personnel.

Ability to work independently without direct supervision and maintain YMCA standards.

Ability to relate and communicate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the 

  community.

Complete all new employee orientation training within 45 days of hire.

SALARY:

Minimum starting rate of $13 an hour with an evenings and weekend differential

Starting rate based on experience

SCHEDULE:

Part-time

Morning/Day, Evening, and/or weekends.
