| Employer Usage | Engineering firms, manufacturing companies | Design firms, R&D departments |
Part Time Mechanical Engineers focus on applying engineering principles to develop and analyze mechanical systems, often working on projects requiring technical expertise. Mechanical Designers primarily create detailed drawings and models for manufacturing, emphasizing CAD skills. While both roles require mechanical engineering knowledge, the engineer's role is more analytical, whereas the designer's role centers on drafting and design documentation.
As a part-time mechanical engineer, you design and build mechanical systems that meet the requirements of a given project. You may use calculation techniques to determine the construction requirements of each device, coordinate with other engineers to design it, and use software to detail the engineering specifications. You typically support full-time engineers, particularly because companies who need new devices usually want them as soon as possible. Depending on the needs of the project, you may also travel to factories or work sites, discuss potential devices with customers, and give presentations. You often work through contracts, but you may work exclusively for an employer.

We are building an automated microfluidic platform that makes complex cell engineering workflows simple, standardized, and automation-ready. Our technology empowers scientists to generate precisely modified primary and immortalized cell lines on demand, bridging the digital and biological to accelerate discovery and therapeutic development.
We are a fast-moving, early-stage startup with offices in Montreal and Boston. This position is open for Montreal. Every team member has the chance to make a real impact on the direction of our platform and the future of gene editing.
Build, test, and troubleshoot microfluidic devices
Assist in the development and refinement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for device fabrication and operation
Support in-house fabrication processes and contribute to evaluating outsourced manufacturing options
Perform QC/QA tests (optical, mechanical, and electrical) across assembled devices
Design and adapt fixtures and jigs for device interfacing and validation
Run fluids through devices to verify cartridge integrity and collect test data
Document, analyze, and report on microfluidic performance testing
Collaborate with biology and engineering teams to integrate feedback into device iterations
Degree or diploma in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field
Hands-on experience with microfabrication or microfluidic device testing; cleanroom experience preferred but not required
Familiarity with CAD design tools; basic programming skills (Python, R) a plus
Comfortable with standard lab and engineering equipment (oscilloscopes, function generators, amplifiers, etc.)
Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and organizational ability
Capable of working independently and contributing in a small, dynamic startup environment
Experience in cleanroom microfabrication techniques such as photolithography
Familiarity with laboratory automation, liquid handling systems, or biology workflows
Previous work in a startup or multidisciplinary R&D environment
This position is based in Montreal, QC. Candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
