Job description

This is not a remote position. All work takes place at our center in Westport, CT. This is a part-time position.

Who We Are

Our fundamental belief at Freudigman & Billings is that children learn best in the context of supportive relationships. We are committed to helping students better understand how they learn and how they can take ownership of that learning. Our team provides educational solutions for adolescents and children through individual assessment, personally tailored learning programs, and one-on-one coaching.

The Role

Our Math & Science Tutors provide individualized academic support to high school students across a range of coursework. Sessions reinforce conceptual understanding, support students with weekly assignments, prepare them for exams, and help develop the analytical and problem-solving skills they need to become more confident and independent learners.

We are particularly interested in candidates who are strong in high school Biology, Math, and Chemistry, and who can work comfortably with students across multiple levels of coursework, including honors and AP classes.

The ideal candidate is not simply a strong student or subject-matter expert, but also curious about how students learn and enjoy figuring out how to explain challenging concepts in ways that make sense to an individual student. Strong relationship-building skills, impeccable organization, critical thinking, and sound professional judgment are essential to success in this role.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one instruction to high school students in Biology, Math, and/or Chemistry
  • Support students across a range of coursework, including honors and AP-level classes
  • Reinforce conceptual understanding rather than simply helping students complete assignments
  • Help students prepare for quizzes, exams, AP exams, and other assessments
  • Develop students’ analytical, problem-solving, and independent learning skills
  • Collaborate with the Subject Tutoring Team to develop and execute individualized plans for each student
  • Coordinate with other members of a student's educational team, such as an Educational Therapist or Test Prep Instructor, to provide coordinated services
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of client information
  • Attend staff meetings and client case reviews as required

Requirements

  • Strong academic background in high school Biology, Math, and/or Chemistry
  • Ability to teach high school coursework confidently; AP-level experience is strongly preferred
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated and driven to help students succeed
  • Natural ability to build strong, productive relationships with students
  • Ability to explain complex concepts clearly and adapt instruction to different students and learning needs
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to think critically and exercise sound professional judgment
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Part-time availability on Sundays and some weekday afternoons/evenings

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Prior tutoring and/or teaching experience
  • Experience working with high school students
  • Experience teaching honors or AP-level coursework
  • Experience with standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT
  • Customer service experience
  • Familiarity with individualized instruction or educational support
