Job description

SecTec is a Northern Virginia-based Managed IT and Cybersecurity provider supporting nonprofits, law firms, healthcare organizations, professional services firms, and small to mid-sized businesses.

We provide managed IT support, cybersecurity, Microsoft 365 administration, endpoint management, network support, and cloud services.


We are looking for a dependable and customer-focused Part-Time Field IT Technician to provide hands-on technical support at client locations throughout Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, and Maryland.

Position Overview


The Field IT Technician will serve as SecTec's on-site technical resource when clients require hands-on assistance.


This is a junior-level position ideal for someone with a strong foundation in IT who wants to gain experience working in a Managed Service Provider (MSP) environment.


The technician will primarily assist with workstation deployments, hardware replacements, basic network troubleshooting, printer and peripheral issues, new employee setups, equipment inventory, and other on-site support needs.


When an issue requires advanced troubleshooting, the technician will work with SecTec's senior engineers remotely to resolve the problem.


When not dispatched to a client location, the technician may assist with remote support, device monitoring, documentation, and other technical tasks.

Responsibilities


On-Site Client Support

  • Travel to client locations throughout Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, and Maryland.
  • Provide professional hands-on technical support.
  • Install and configure laptops, desktops, monitors, docking stations, printers, scanners, and peripherals.
  • Set up workstations for new employees.
  • Replace and migrate computers.
  • Troubleshoot basic hardware issues.
  • Troubleshoot printers and peripherals.
  • Assist with conference room and meeting room technology.
  • Install and replace basic network equipment.
  • Assist with office technology moves and deployments.
  • Perform equipment and asset inventories.
  • Work with SecTec engineers remotely when advanced troubleshooting is required.


Help Desk & End-User Support

  • Provide Tier 1 and basic Tier 2 support.
  • Troubleshoot Windows 10 and Windows 11.
  • Provide basic macOS support.
  • Troubleshoot Microsoft Office applications.
  • Resolve password and login issues.
  • Assist users with MFA enrollment and troubleshooting.
  • Troubleshoot basic internet and Wi-Fi connectivity issues.
  • Troubleshoot VPN connectivity.
  • Provide remote support when not working at a client site.
  • Document work completed in the ticketing system.


Microsoft 365 Support

Assist with basic Microsoft 365 administration, including:

  • Creating and disabling user accounts.
  • Employee onboarding and offboarding.
  • Password resets.
  • MFA enrollment.
  • Microsoft 365 licensing.
  • Outlook troubleshooting.
  • Microsoft Teams support.
  • OneDrive troubleshooting.
  • Basic SharePoint support.
  • Shared mailbox configuration.
  • Distribution list administration.

Advanced Microsoft 365 issues will be escalated to senior SecTec engineers.


Endpoint Management

The technician will assist with:

  • NinjaOne agent installation.
  • SentinelOne installation.
  • Device monitoring.
  • Windows updates.
  • Application patching.
  • Software installation.
  • Laptop and desktop deployments.
  • Hardware inventory.
  • Device encryption verification.
  • Basic workstation security configuration.
  • Removing unauthorized software when directed.


Cybersecurity Support

The technician will assist SecTec engineers with:

  • SentinelOne EDR deployments.
  • Microsoft Defender.
  • Endpoint security checks.
  • Antivirus troubleshooting.
  • MFA deployment.
  • Security software installations.
  • Phishing email reports.
  • KnowBe4 security awareness training.
  • Vulnerability remediation.
  • Confirming security agents are installed and operational.

Cybersecurity incidents and advanced security investigations will be escalated to SecTec's senior technical team.


Basic Network Support

The technician should have a basic understanding of:

  • TCP/IP.
  • Wi-Fi.
  • DNS.
  • DHCP.
  • Ethernet.
  • Internet connectivity.
  • VPNs.
  • Network switches.
  • Wireless access points.
  • Routers and firewalls.


Typical network assignments may include:

  • Troubleshooting internet connectivity.
  • Testing network cables.
  • Replacing network cables.
  • Connecting workstations to network ports.
  • Rebooting or replacing network equipment under engineer direction.
  • Installing wireless access points.
  • Installing or replacing switches.
  • Working with ISPs during internet outages.
  • Taking pictures and documenting network closets.
  • Identifying network equipment.


Advanced firewall, switching, routing, and network configuration will be handled by senior engineers.

Documentation

Every client visit must be properly documented.

The technician will be expected to document:

  • Work performed.
  • Equipment installed or removed.
  • Serial numbers and asset information.
  • Issues discovered.
  • Troubleshooting performed.
  • Pictures of equipment or network closets when requested.
  • Items requiring additional follow-up.
  • Issues escalated to senior engineers.


Required Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of computers, Windows, and networking.
  • Comfortable troubleshooting laptops and desktops.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365.
  • Basic understanding of Wi-Fi and network connectivity.
  • Comfortable installing computer equipment and peripherals.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication.
  • Dependable and punctual.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies.
  • Ability to work independently at client locations.
  • Ability to recognize when an issue needs to be escalated.


Previous professional IT experience is preferred but not required for a candidate with strong technical knowledge and a willingness to learn.

ravel Requirements

This position requires regular local travel.

The technician must:

  • Have a valid driver's license.
  • Have reliable transportation.
  • Be comfortable driving throughout Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, and Maryland.
  • Be available for client dispatches based on scheduling and client needs.


Approved business mileage will be reimbursed according to SecTec policy.

Physical Requirements

The technician should be comfortable:

  • Carrying laptops and IT equipment.
  • Installing equipment underneath desks.
  • Working in network closets.
  • Connecting and organizing cables.
  • Installing monitors and peripherals.
  • Lifting approximately 40 pounds when necessary.

his is a part-time position.

Hours will vary depending on client support needs, projects, and scheduled field assignments.

Most work will take place during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. Occasional evening or weekend work may be available for deployments, office moves, or scheduled maintenance.
