Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia's capital city and five nearby counties. Annually, our four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. Reynolds is committed to hiring and retaining a racially diverse, culturally competent staff at all levels of the organization who reflect the demographics of our students. We also believe in providing an ongoing investment in our faculty and staff to deepen their skills and competencies to serve the full range of our student population.
The Library Specialist provides frontline customer service by staffing the library service desk during afternoon and evening hours. This position performs routine circulation functions, including checking library materials in and out, renewing and retrieving materials, and overseeing study room usage in accordance with established library policies and procedures. The Library Specialist I assists library users by answering directional and informational questions, explaining library policies and procedures, and ensuring compliance with all library guidelines. The position reports security concerns and emergency situations to the supervisor or director promptly and maintains daily operational statistics.
In addition, the Library Specialist follows established procedures for the distribution and return of student laptops, assists users with the online catalog, electronic databases, and other library software applications when professional staff are unavailable, and provides instruction on the use of photocopiers and other library equipment as needed. Responsibilities also include shelving library materials to maintain an organized collection and performing other duties and special projects as assigned to support the effective operation of the library.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the general support activities of library operations.
  • Knowledge of library or relevant customer service policies, procedures, and techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize an automated circulation system or similar program; to operate a personal computer and use Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist patrons in locating information; to make sound and practical decisions independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, utilizing strong interpersonal skills.

Additional Considerations
  • Work experience in a community college or other education library.
  • Working knowledge of library functions such as circulation including use of an automated circulation system, stacks maintenance, etc.
