Job description

The Portage County Public Library is hiring a part-time (20 hrs / wk) Circulation Aide to join the team! This position includes regularly scheduled daytime, evening, and weekend work and is based out of the Stevens Point location, however some hours may be spent at the other branch locations.
What are the primary job duties?
Maintains appearance and order of library shelves to ensure maximum access for library users.
  • Checks in library materials from book drop, South Central Library System (SCLS) delivery, etc.; sorts and tags items designated by automated circulation system for the "hold" shelf or for other branches and SCLS libraries. May clean and/or dust books as necessary.
  • Arranges returned materials on sorting shelves or book carts; takes library materials to appropriate shelves and reshelves them in proper alphanumeric order.
  • Checks the order of the items on the shelves and arranges in proper order if necessary (shelf reading) and straightens materials on the shelves or in the collection while shelving and in other assigned areas; may do light dusting and other maintenance of shelves and library materials in conjunction with shelving.
  • Locates and retrieves materials from the shelves for patrons' requests.
  • Removes damaged items for mending, withdrawal, or return to the owning library. Performs or assists with preparing, repairing, or reconditioning library materials.
  • Cleans CDs, DVDs and other items as necessary using appropriate equipment.
  • Processes newspapers by recording receipt, stamping, and shelving.

Staffs circulation desk & other miscellaneous duties.
  • Performs circulation desk procedures, such as checking out materials, registering patrons and collecting overdue charges.
  • Answers telephone, answers directional questions in person or by telephone and refers library users to appropriate personnel.
  • May assist with library programs, display set up, and staffing Youth Services desk.
  • Performs other library related tasks as necessary or assigned.

What are minimum education and experience requirements?
  • High school diploma, or equivalent.
  • Library experience helpful, but not required.
  • Customer service experience preferred.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license and good driving record.
