What is a part-time LCSW?

Part-time LCSWs, or Licensed Clinical Social Workers, are mental health professionals who work less than full-time hours, typically providing therapy, counseling, and support services to individuals, families, or groups. They are licensed to diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues, often working in healthcare settings, private practices, schools, or community organizations. Working part-time allows LCSWs flexibility in their schedules while still fulfilling licensure requirements and making a meaningful impact in their clients’ lives.

What does a part-time LCSW do?

A part-time licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) works fewer than 35 hours per week to provide mental health services on a case by case basis. Your responsibilities are to meet with each client to provide a mental health assessment, offer support to the client through counseling and connection to community resources, and design an ongoing treatment plan for the client to improve their mental health. Your duties may also include contacting emergency services if you believe a client needs further help, working with health insurance companies to develop mental health services, and cooperating with social services and court cases when necessary.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time LCSW, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), you need a master's degree in social work, state licensure, and experience in clinical assessment and therapeutic intervention. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR), telehealth platforms, and standardized assessment tools is often required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and strong boundaries are vital soft skills for building trust and supporting clients effectively. These competencies ensure ethical, effective care and maximize client outcomes while meeting professional standards within a flexible work schedule.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time LCSWs and how can they be managed?

Part-time Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) often face challenges such as balancing a limited schedule with client needs, managing caseloads efficiently, and ensuring continuity of care. Communication with supervisors and colleagues is crucial to coordinate client coverage and maintain high-quality services. Setting clear boundaries for availability and maintaining thorough documentation can help address these challenges, allowing part-time LCSWs to provide effective support while managing their workload.

Job description

♥ Part-Time Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Remote | Maryland License Required | Flexible Schedule
Fully Remote | Part-Time | Preferred Hours: Weekdays 2 PM-9 PM | Weekend Availability a Plus
Make a Meaningful Difference - On a Schedule That Works for You
What if you could do meaningful clinical work without sacrificing the flexibility you need outside of work?
At Backpack Healthcare, we're transforming access to behavioral healthcare for children, adolescents, and young adults. As a clinician-led, minority-owned organization, we believe great care starts with meeting families where they are - and supporting the clinicians who care for them.
We're looking for passionate Licensed Clinical Social Workers and Social Work Clinicians who bring a strengths-based, trauma-informed, and systems-oriented approach to their work.
Whether you're looking to supplement your practice, build your caseload, serve your community, or grow toward clinical leadership, Backpack gives you the flexibility and support to make an impact.
Competitive Compensation + Monthly Bonus Potential
  • $65 per billable hour - LCSW-C/LCPC/LMFT, independently licensed
  • $45 per billable hour - LMSW/LGPC, with clinical supervision provided
  • Monthly bonus potential for eligible clinicians based on applicable productivity and performance criteria
  • Target caseload of 15-22 sessions per week
  • Clinical supervision and professional development opportunities
Earn More While You Grow
Your earning potential goes beyond your billable rate.
Eligible clinicians have the opportunity to earn a monthly performance-based bonus in addition to their regular compensation. Bonus eligibility is based on applicable productivity and performance expectations, providing an additional opportunity to increase your monthly earnings while being recognized for delivering consistent, high-quality care.
Why You'll Love This Role
100% Remote. Statewide Impact.
Provide meaningful mental health care to youth and families across Maryland - without the commute, office overhead, or geographic barriers.
Flexibility That Fits Your Life
Build a part-time schedule around your life. Our highest-need hours are typically weekday afternoons and evenings, 2 PM-9 PM, with weekend availability welcomed.
Practice the Social Work You Believe In
Social work is about more than what happens inside a therapy session. Support the whole family system through care coordination, resource connection, family education, and attention to social determinants of health.
♥ A Team That Has Your Back
You won't be on your own. Collaborate with therapists, psychiatrists, PMHNPs, Care Coordinators, and other members of our multidisciplinary team.
Grow Without Leaving the Clinical Work You Love
Take advantage of:
  • Free clinical supervision for eligible LMSWs
  • CEU reimbursement and ongoing training
  • Mentorship opportunities
  • Clinical leadership pathways
  • Future supervision and leadership opportunities

What You'll Do
As a Backpack clinician, you'll:
  • Provide individual, family, and caregiver-focused therapy through secure telehealth
  • Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments
  • Develop strengths-based, client-centered treatment plans
  • ♥ Deliver trauma-informed and culturally responsive care
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, PMHNPs, therapists, and care team members
  • Support care coordination, resource linkage, and family education
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and compliant documentation in our EHR
  • Partner with families to create sustainable change beyond the therapy session

Benefits for Eligible Part-Time Team Members
Depending on eligibility, you'll have access to:
  • 401(k) with 3% company match
  • $25,000 company-paid life insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • CEU reimbursement and ongoing professional training
  • Clinical supervision opportunities
  • Mentorship and clinical leadership development pathways

What We're Looking For
Required/Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active Maryland license - LCSW-C or LMSW strongly preferred
  • LGPC or LCPC candidates may also be considered
  • Master's degree or higher in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Marriage & Family Therapy, or related behavioral health discipline
  • Experience or strong interest in working with children, adolescents, and families
  • Strong understanding of social work values, advocacy, equity, and client-centered care
  • Comfortable working independently in a fully remote environment
  • Strong communication, documentation, and technology skills
  • USES Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred
  • Commitment to trauma-informed and culturally responsive practice

♥ Why Backpack Healthcare?
Since 2020, we've served 12,000+ children and families through accessible behavioral healthcare.
We're building something different: a place where clinicians can provide excellent care without having to choose between meaningful work and a sustainable career.
At Backpack, you can start part-time and grow your clinical skills, expand your impact, pursue supervision or mentorship, and explore leadership opportunities as your career evolves.
When clinicians thrive, kids thrive. That's not just a tagline - it's how we build.
Ready to Make an Impact?
If you're a Maryland-licensed social worker looking for flexibility, strong clinical support, competitive compensation, monthly bonus potential, and meaningful work with youth and families, we'd love to hear from you.
Backpack Healthcare is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We believe the strength of our care depends on the diversity and well-being of our team. We celebrate differences in background, identity, experience, ability, and perspective, and we welcome qualified candidates from all communities to bring their unique talents to Backpack.
