Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

The Markey Lab studies the relationship between the intestinal microbiome and the outcomes of cancer immunotherapies, particularly bone marrow transplantation. The successful lab aide candidate will join a growing team focused on answering questions regarding the influence of the microbiome and the metabolites it produces on immune function. The candidate will be supervised and supported by the PI Dr. Markey, as well as the current technician, post-doc and students in the group.
This is a work-study opening. Work-study is a college / university program that enables part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, affording them assistance with educational expenses. Applicants eligible to apply need to have the following:
  • Currently on or will be eligible for off-campus work-study during the upcoming academic school year.

You will be required to submit Financial Aid documentation confirming work study eligibility for off-campus work prior to interview
Responsibilities
  • Assist lab members with experimental setups, sample preparation, and general laboratory procedures to support research workflows.
  • Weigh experimental mice and collect fecal samples with strict adherence to lab protocols and clear labeling.
  • Support mouse work within the lab (e.g., oral gavages, intraperitoneal injections, daily mouse checks on a rotating roster) in accordance with approved study protocols.
  • Prepare and maintain sterile media, buffers, and reagent stocks for in vivo studies.
  • Perform regular and weekend mouse checks (usually takes less than an hour on weekends) ensuring welfare and compliance with IACUC protocols.
  • Clean and organize laboratory glassware and consumables to maintain the lab space.
  • Maintain and organize laboratory freezers (e.g., regular sample transfers from -20 to -80) to ensure efficient sample retrieval and integrity.
  • A minimum commitment is expected; however, reasonable flexibility will be provided for vacations and personal time.
  • Clear and consistent communication regarding availability and responsibilities is expected.
  • Training will be provided for all laboratory techniques and protocols.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate program with work study eligibility

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Some lab experience and/or college level chemistry courses

The hourly pay range for this position is from $21.30 to $30.13 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.
