Job description

  1. GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Sorter contributes to advancing the mission of St. Vincent de Paul ("SVDP") through efficient processing of donated merchandise. This position is responsible for the receipt, evaluation, pricing, tagging, and merchandising of items for retail sale. The Sorter plays a critical role in inventory management by ensuring donated goods are properly prepared and transferred to the sales floor in accordance with organizational standards. This position reports directly to the Store Manager.

  1. Education, Experience & Certifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is preferred
  1. Other Qualifications:
  • Possess sufficient reading comprehension abilities to understand and implement established operational procedures
  • Demonstrate exceptional math and computer technology skills
  • Demonstrate respect for the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church and the mission of St. Vincent de Paul
  1. Physical Demands:
  • Maintain ability to stand and ambulate for extended periods of up to eight (8) hours with appropriate rest periods
  • Perform manual dexterity tasks requiring use of hands and arms for reaching, grasping, and manipulating objects
  • Utilize verbal communication, auditory, and visual capabilities for extended durations
  • Occasionally assume seated positions; navigate stairs or inclines; and postural movements, including stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling
  • Lift and move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds on occasional basis unassisted
  • Lift and move items weighing up to fifty plus (50+) pounds on an occasional basis with assistance

D. Technology Competencies:
  • Demonstrate proficiency with fundamental computer operations and standard office applications
  • Accurately perform data entry tasks with attention to detail
  • Effective utilize various electronic communication platforms and tools
  • Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems with precision and efficiency
  • Properly use merchandise tagging equipment according to established protocols
  • Correctly operate barcode scanning equipment and label generation devices
  • Manage basic printer operations and perform simple troubleshooting procedures
  1. Working Environment:
  • Position may be structured as full-time (40 hours per week) or part-time based on operational needs
  • Work environment includes both climate-controlled and non-climate-controlled warehouse and retail settings
  • Schedule flexibility required, including potential evening, weekend, and holiday shifts as necessitated by business requirements
  • Periodic exposure to outdoor weather conditions may be necessary
  • Periodic exposure to cleaning chemicals, bodily fluids or bloodborne pathogens may occur

IV. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
A. Donation Processing
  • Deliver prompt, courteous service to donors while accepting donated merchandise
  • Receive donated merchandise according to organization protocols
  • Implement proper procedures for receiving, inspecting, sorting, and storing donated items
  • Evaluate merchandise for quality, condition, and cleanliness according to established standards
  • Categorize merchandise utilizing the quality tier system (good, better, best)
  • Apply appropriate pricing and tagging in accordance with store procedures and pricing benchmarks
  • Maintain an organized work area and monitor supply inventory needed for processing functions
  • Consistently achieve established daily productivity metrics
  • Utilize proper PPE when sorting donations, including, but not limited to, gloves
  • Exhibit flexibility regarding position responsibilities and willingness to perform additional duties as

assigned
B. Merchandise Management
  • Position merchandise effectively on sales floor fixtures to optimize presentation and sales potential
  • Provide point-of-sale (POS) support as needed during high-volume periods, while maintaining a professional and courteous demeanor

C. Facility Maintenance
  • Perform daily cleaning duties, including floor maintenance and sanitizing of display fixtures, restrooms, processing center, and storage areas
  • Ensure warehouse areas remain organized, clean, and compliant with safety regulations
  • Maintain the exterior store environment in a clean, orderly, and welcoming condition
