To thrive as a Part Time JavaScript Developer, you need a solid understanding of JavaScript fundamentals, web development concepts, and experience with HTML, CSS, and front-end frameworks. Familiarity with version control systems like Git and tools such as Node.js, React, or Angular is typically expected, and certifications in web development can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help in balancing multiple projects and collaborating with teams remotely. These skills ensure efficient code delivery, maintainable web applications, and effective teamwork in a flexible, part-time environment.

Part-time JavaScript developers often work closely with full-time team members through regular stand-up meetings, project management tools, and version control systems. It's common for part-time developers to have flexible schedules, but they are usually expected to align their work hours partially with the team's core hours for collaboration. Staying proactive about asking questions and providing status updates helps maintain alignment with the team's objectives and ensures smooth progress on shared tasks.

Role Summary

BadVR is looking for a part-time hourly Node.js developer to help maintain and extend a server-side JavaScript codebase that supports REST administration APIs, authenticated WebSocket synchronization for VR/XR and web clients, SQLite persistence, UDP discovery, MQTT messaging, and MCP tooling integrations. This role is best suited for an enthusiastic dev who can contribute independently in a focused codebase, architect plans for new features, and write production-minded JavaScript with automated test coverage.

DISCLAIMER: This is a part-time W2 employee hourly position with working hours from 10AM-6PM PST, Monday through Friday (with occasional night and weekend time). It will require the employee to work on company-issued computers with pre-installed activity-tracking software. During working hours, the employee must screen-share with the team and have their web-camera on. These working policies are non-negotiable.

Time Commitment

  • Part-time role; approximately 10-20 hours per week
  • Flexible schedule with enough overlap for planning, code review, and release coordination
  • Initial engagement can begin as a short trial project focused on a well-scoped bug fix or feature

Job Duties

  • Maintain and extend Express REST and WS endpoints for both text and binary protocols
  • Add or improve mocha tests across isolated test suites, with code coverage metrics
  • Build and test SQLite-backed domain logic using better-sqlite3
  • Support integrations like MQTT broker, UDP discovery, file watchers, virtual assets, and AI MCP tooling
  • Document implementations, operational assumptions, and developer workflows for future contributors

Required Qualifications (MANDATORY)

  • Strong professional experience (minimum 5 years of professional experience) with modern Node.js and JavaScript ES modules
  • Experience building REST APIs with Express under unit and integration tests w/ Mocha, Chai, Supertest
  • Comfortable working in an existing codebase and following established conventions
  • Strong Git hygiene: small commits, clear commit messages, and review-friendly pull requests
  • Clear written communication for asynchronous technical collaboration

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with multiplayer and binary networking protocols
  • Familiarity with MQTT, UDP discovery, local network services, and edge deployment
  • Interest in AI developer tooling or Model Context Protocol integrations
  • Comfort debugging Node.js applications on Linux or embedded/router-like environments
  • Active (or prior) security clearance
