Job description

Position Type:
Stipend Positions/Robotics Coach
Date Posted:
10/31/2025
Location:
Yarmouth High SchoolYarmouth High School Robotics Coach
Position: YHS Robotics Coach
Competition Format: VEX V5; 2025-26 Challenge: Push Back

Employment type: Part-time/seasonal (after school + occasional weekend events)
Location: YHS Robotics Lab
Start date: ASAP
Position summary:
We're seeking an enthusiastic, patient, and organized Robotics Coach to lead our after-school VEX team. The coach will join a passionate Yarmouth community of coaches, students and parents that are dedicated to ensuring the continued success of our program. Students and coaches must follow the guidelines laid out in the VEX Push Back Game Manual - most important of these are the Code of Conduct and Student-Centered Policy.
Key responsibilities:
  • Facilitate weekly after-school sessions (5 hours per week, more leading up to a tournament).
  • Teach and model safe shop practices; enforce safety rules during build sessions and at events.
  • Support teams/captains in: assigning roles (driver, builder, programmer, pit lead, scouting, notebook/documentation), manage parts inventory and tools, and maintain a season roadmap (design โ†’ build โ†’ testing โ†’ competition).
  • Work with coaches and boosters to recruit and coordinate adult volunteers (parents, community mentors, teachers); delegate tasks so students remain primary actors. V5RC
  • Prepare the team for competitions: register events, coordinate travel/permission slips, run mock matches, and help students prepare engineering notebooks and presentations for judging.
  • Represent the program professionally and follow the RECF/VEX Code of Conduct at all times.
  • Attend several local qualifying events and Regional Championship.
  • Work with the Yarmouth STEAM Boosters to track budgeted expenses, request replacement parts, and support fundraising if needed.
  • Support the 5th Grade Robotics program at YES and facilitate high school volunteers from the team.
Important coaching boundaries & best practices:
  • Coaches mentor and guide; students must perform the physical building, programming, and decision-making. Adult work on the robot during matches or in the pit should be limited according to RECF rules and Student-Centered Policy - coaches should train students to diagnose and fix issues with adult guidance, not do it for them.
  • Participate in coach/event partner training certifications provided by RECF/VEX. These training opportunities are available to complete online asynchronously.
Required qualifications:
  • Comfortable working with 22+ students (elementary through high school depending on program) in a hands-on environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage time in an after-school setting.
  • Background check clearance (required by school/district).
  • An open mind and willingness to learn.
