Position Summary
The Research Technician supports biomedical and translational research by performing laboratory procedures, processing biological specimens, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring compliance with established safety, quality, and regulatory standards. Working closely with principal investigators, research operations manager, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and laboratory personnel, the technician contributes to pathology-based research projects while supporting the care and management of specialized animal models. This position has both laboratory and animal care responsibilities. The Research Technician will process and prepare animal tissues, blood, and other biological specimens for research and assist in studies.
In addition to laboratory responsibilities, the technician will assist in routine care for canine hemophiliacs and healthy control animals housed at the Francis Owen Blood Research Laboratory (FOBRL), a specialized research and breeding facility for dogs and pigs. The Research Technician will monitor animals for signs of hemorrhage, illness, injury, or distress and promptly report abnormalities to veterinary staff and investigators. Primary responsibilities include assisting with plasma banking, specimen collection and processing, and supporting routine veterinary care through the administration of treatments and medications under the direction of a veterinarian. The Research Technician will maintain accurate laboratory and animal health records, adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs), and assist with the operation and maintenance of laboratory and veterinary diagnostic equipment.
Because the health and welfare of the research animal colonies require continuous care, this position requires availability to work a rotating schedule that includes evenings, weekends, holidays, and during periods of inclement weather. This scheduling flexibility is an essential function of the position.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Management Preferences
  • Knowledge of basic veterinary and research lab equipment.
  • Some knowledge or experience of veterinary procedures or administering medical treatments, such as: injectable and oral medications.
  • Ability to identify animal health issues.
  • Experience in large animal research such as pig experience.
  • Experience in emergency veterinary medicine and/or hemophilia.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to move animals up to 150 pounds with or without accommodation.
