Search/Comparison IntentPart Time Interior Design vs Interior Decorator

Part Time Interior Design involves creating functional and aesthetic spaces, often requiring formal training, while Interior Decorators focus on decorating and furnishing spaces without necessarily designing layouts. Both roles work in similar environments but serve different aspects of interior aesthetics and functionality.

What is a part-time interior designer?

Part time interior designers are professionals who work less than full-time hours to help clients plan, design, and decorate interior spaces. They may assist with selecting color schemes, furniture, lighting, and other decorative elements to enhance the functionality and aesthetics of homes or businesses. Part time interior designers often work flexible schedules, making this role ideal for those seeking work-life balance or additional income. Their duties may include client consultations, creating design plans, sourcing materials, and overseeing project installations within limited hours each week.

Can I do part time interior design as a side hustle?

Part time interior design is a common side hustle for those with design skills, a good eye for aesthetics, and familiarity with design software. It typically involves flexible scheduling and can be done independently or through freelance platforms, but it may require certifications or licensing depending on local regulations. Successful part time interior designers often build a portfolio and establish client relationships outside of full-time employment.

How does working as a part-time interior designer typically impact collaboration with clients and project teams?

Part-time interior designers often work with flexible schedules, which can influence how and when they collaborate with clients and other team members. Clear communication and effective time management are essential, as you may need to coordinate meetings or site visits around your limited availability. Many firms support remote collaboration tools, making it easier to contribute to design discussions and share updates even when not on-site. Staying organized and proactive about deadlines ensures smooth project progress and helps maintain strong professional relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time interior designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part-Time Interior Designer, you generally need a background in interior design or a related field, with skills in spatial planning, color theory, and design principles. Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, or Adobe Creative Suite, and sometimes certification from organizations like NCIDQ, is highly beneficial. Strong communication, creativity, and time management are key soft skills for understanding client needs and managing multiple projects efficiently. These abilities enable designers to deliver compelling, functional spaces that meet client expectations while working within time constraints.

Guided by our collective mission, our team is driven, hardworking, and highly ambitious. We're problem solvers, innovators and design enthusiasts. We are relentlessly focused on delivering beautiful, and delightfully simple solutions for our customers, creating curated and considered spaces to live in.

About You:

Seasonal Employment

  • In-person, Part-time (up to 29 hours/week)

What You'll Do:

  • Support Trade Account Executives with administrative tasks throughout the sales cycle
  • Offer elevated, consultative service across multiple channels (in person, chat, text, email, phone) to create a personalized experience
  • Deliver exceptional design and product expertise to Trade clients
  • Support the trade sales team through communication and proactive outreach
  • Qualify leads and identify opportunities for upselling, cross-selling, and expanding customer orders
  • Advise Trade clients on how to size, floor plan layouts, and material selection
  • Ability to navigate between multiple software applications
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and on-brand showroom that delights Trade clients at every touchpoint
  • Spread kindness through every touchpoint, creating brand fans!
  • This is an in-person role, based out of our showroom located in the Mosaic District in Fairfax, VA.

Qualifications Include:

  • 2+ years of experience in a consumer-facing role, working with the Trade industry.
  • 2+ years of customer service and/or direct consumer sales
  • High level of proficiency working online across multiple software tools such as Zoom, Google suite, Salesforce, Gladly, Shopify
  • Solutions oriented with sound judgment, business sense, and high integrity
  • Willingness to work in a collaborative environment and wear many hats
  • Great time management and organizational skills
  • Flexible schedule, including weekend and holiday hours

Nice to Have:

  • Knowledge and enthusiasm for the design industry
  • Home furnishings or design industry experience.
  • BA or experience working in a creative field, interior design, art history, architecture, etc.
  • Account management experience
