What is a part time insurance agent?

Part time insurance agents are professionals who sell insurance policies and provide related services, but work fewer hours than full-time agents. They typically assist clients in choosing the right insurance coverage, explain policy details, and help with claims processing. Working part time allows them to balance other commitments, such as another job or personal responsibilities, while still earning commissions and building client relationships. Part time agents may work for insurance agencies, brokers, or independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time insurance agent?

To thrive as a Part Time Insurance Agent, you need a solid understanding of insurance products, strong sales skills, and typically a state-issued insurance license. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software and quoting systems is often required. Excellent interpersonal communication, self-motivation, and time management are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for building client trust, meeting sales targets, and efficiently managing a flexible work schedule.

How does working as a part-time insurance agent impact commission structure and client management responsibilities?

As a part-time insurance agent, your commission structure is typically similar to that of full-time agents, but your earning potential depends on the number of clients you engage and policies you sell. You'll often manage a smaller client portfolio, which allows for flexible scheduling but may require strong time management to balance appointments, follow-ups, and administrative duties. Collaboration with full-time agents and office staff is common, especially for training, lead sharing, or handling complex cases. Many agencies offer mentorship and ongoing training, which can support career advancement into full-time or senior roles if desired.

What is the difference between Part Time Insurance Agent vs Full Time Insurance Agent?

AspectPart Time Insurance AgentFull Time Insurance Agent
Work HoursFewer hours, typically less than 30 hours/weekFull schedule, usually 35+ hours/week
CertificationsOften the same certifications requiredSame certifications required
Work EnvironmentFlexible, often independent or part-time office/remoteConsistent, full-time office or agency setting
Income PotentialLower, based on part-time commissionsHigher, with full-time commissions and bonuses

Part Time Insurance Agents work fewer hours with flexible schedules, often earning commissions on a part-time basis. Full Time Insurance Agents work regular hours, typically earning higher income through full-time commissions and incentives. Both roles require similar certifications and operate within the same industry environment.

How to be a part time insurance agent?

To become a part-time insurance agent, you typically need to obtain the required licensing for your state or region, which involves completing pre-licensing education and passing a licensing exam. You should also develop sales and customer service skills, and often work with an insurance company or agency that offers part-time opportunities. Flexibility in scheduling and understanding insurance products are important for success in this role.

Why do so many part time insurance agents quit?

Part time insurance agents often quit due to inconsistent income, limited benefits, and the challenge of balancing sales targets with other commitments. The job requires strong sales skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently, which can be difficult to sustain on a part-time basis.

Community Business Development Representative - Bilingual Spanish
Mary Henry State Farm
Louisville, KY | Part-Time | Flexible Schedule

At Mary Henry State Farm, we believe business grows best when people do. We are deeply rooted in Louisville, where we help families and businesses protect what matters most. We're not your typical insurance office - we're a team that values relationships, community, and genuine connection.
We're seeking an outgoing, bilingual Spanish, relationship-driven professional to serve as our Community Business Development Representative. In this role, you'll focus on building and maintaining referral partnerships with local professionals- mortgage brokers, realtors, apartment communities, small business owners, and other community partners. You'll represent our agency in the community while developing creative ways to support our partners, help them grow their business, and increase awareness of ours. This position is not about quick "meet-and-greets." It's about becoming a trusted connector - someone who truly cares about helping others succeed.
Position Overview
This is a part-time position, with expected hours varying between 15-25 hours per week depending on events, networking opportunities, and the activity level of the current week. A flexible schedule is important, as some events or partner meetings may take place outside of traditional office hours.
Insurance licensing is not required for this role unless responsibilities expand in the future.
Key Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain long-term relationships with community professionals.
  • Develop and support relationships within English- and Spanish-speaking communities.
  • Identify opportunities to connect referral partners with helpful resources, introductions, and business growth opportunities.
  • Attend local networking events, community meetings, and partner visits to strengthen agency presence.
  • Generate qualified lead opportunities through trusted community relationships.
  • Represent the agency's values of trust, care, and community in every interaction.

Success in This Role Looks Like
  • Developing 10-15 active referral partners within the first 90 days.
  • Generating 20-30 qualified personal and business leads per month.
  • Maintaining consistent communication with referral partners through visits, calls, events, and appreciation efforts.
  • Helping the agency become the first insurance recommendation among key community partners.

Requirements
  • Bilingual Spanish required.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience in business development, community outreach, networking, or relationship-based sales preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Comfortable attending community events, making introductions, and developing new professional relationships.

What We Offer
  • Base pay plus performance incentives.
  • Flexible part-time schedule, 15-25 hours per week.
  • Supportive, growth-minded team environment with ongoing coaching and development.
  • Opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the local business community.

Ideal Candidate
You love connecting people and ideas. You are bilingual in Spanish and English and are comfortable building relationships across diverse communities. You listen more than you talk. You're known for following through, lifting others up, and turning introductions into partnerships. You are comfortable walking into a room, starting conversations, and finding meaningful ways to support local professionals.
Equal Opportunity Employer
Mary Henry State Farm is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all applicants and employees and do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status. This position is with a State Farm independent contractor agent, not with State Farm Insurance Companies.
Flexible work from home options available.
Compensation: $25.00 - $28.00 per hour
My team's mission is to help people manage the risks of everyday life, recover from the unexpected and realize their dreams. We are located in Louisville, KY and help customers with their insurance and financial services needs, including:
