Project Overview:

The Knoxville Engineering Office is the engineering execution center for Bechtel’s Nuclear, Security, & Environmental business line, providing engineering design development and support to multiple large complex projects. Projects executed out of this office are primarily large government works throughout various sectors, including DOD and DOE.

Job Summary:

This position is for a Senior HVAC Mechanical Engineer who will work on various projects as part of the Mechanical Engineering/HVAC team. The projects that will be assigned involve government work through various sectors, including DOD and DOE. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving skills, can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs.

In this role, you will design and develop HVAC and Mechanical systems for project(s) by preparing studies, mechanical drawings, calculations, material requisitions, engineering specifications, equipment data sheets, evaluation, and more in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements. The engineer will work with other mechanical engineers, other disciplines/functions, and/or the client. Your recommendations will resolve technical issues and ensure the unique and complex requirements of a project’s mechanical aspects are met. 

This role will be based in Knoxville, TN with periodic business travel, as required.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Design HVAC systems for industrial and commercial facilities.
  • Originate and check HVAC design and procurement documents, including, but not limited to, ventilation and instrumentation diagrams (V&IDs), supporting calculations, data sheets, engineering specifications, and material requisitions.
  • Support interfacing mechanical and fire protection design and procurement activities.
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard mechanical engineering methods, techniques, procedures, and criteria to support engineering design decisions.
  • Coordinate mechanical engineering efforts in assigned areas with specialty groups, engineering disciplines, the client, vendor, contractors, construction and other functional groups.
  • Originate, check and review conceptual studies, designs, reports, or proposals.
  • Provide technical assistance to other mechanical and fire protection personnel and interact with interfacing project functions, the customer, and regulatory agency personnel in the resolution of complex regulatory issues and industry codes and standards.
  • Assist project and construction management in identifying and complying with project mechanical requirements and in addressing issues as they arise during project execution.
  • Prepare mechanical engineering reports for clients, as required.
  • Mentor and assist junior HVAC team members.
  • Select components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability.
  • Apply knowledge of industry, and regulatory guides, codes, and standards.
  • Complete quality engineering task assignments within budget and on schedule.
  • Support and implement the Bechtel Quality Culture in day-to-day work activities.
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Level One: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical (or related) Engineering with five (5) years of progressive related professional work experience.
  • Level Two: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical (or related) Engineering with eight (8) years of progressive related professional work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
  • Must be authorized to live and work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
  • Fundamental understanding and proficiency of HVAC design, ASHRAE fundamentals, and mechanical systems. 
  • Experience developing heat load, airflow and static pressure drop calculations.
  • Experience developing HVAC airflow diagrams and/or ventilation and instrumentation diagrams.
  • Experience selecting HVAC equipment solutions to meet design requirements and develop procurement specifications to support the requisition process.
  • Experience collaborating/leading in a multi-discipline team to develop engineering and procurement design deliverables for large complex projects. 
  • Experience with HVAC specific software such as Carrier HAP, Trane Trace, etc.
  • Ability to implement industry codes and standards into HVAC system design.
  • A competitive candidate will have experience in HVAC or mechanical design on large government and/or capital projects along with an aptitude to take on new work.
  • U.S. Professional Engineering License (or ability to obtain).
