To thrive as a Part Time Hospice RN, you need strong clinical nursing skills, experience in pain and symptom management, and an active RN license, often with additional hospice or palliative care certification. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), medication administration systems, and home health documentation tools is common in this role. Compassion, excellent communication, and emotional resilience are crucial soft skills for supporting patients and families through end-of-life care. These skills ensure high-quality, empathetic care and effective collaboration within interdisciplinary hospice teams.

What are some common challenges faced by part time hospice RNs, and how can they effectively manage them?

Part-time hospice RNs often face challenges such as managing a fluctuating patient load, coordinating care across multiple shifts, and maintaining strong communication with the interdisciplinary team despite limited hours. To address these challenges, it's important to stay organized, proactively update documentation, and utilize handoff tools to ensure continuity of care. Building strong relationships with colleagues and staying connected via regular team meetings or digital communication platforms can also help part-time RNs stay informed and provide high-quality, compassionate care.

Job description

As a Bluegrass Care Navigators' Hospice Team member, you will be a part of a team providing care and support to patients and their families who no longer receive treatments to cure their terminal illness but instead choose care to improve their comfort and quality of life. Our service allows our team members to focus on one patient at a time providing care where the patient calls home. While this often is a house or apartment, we also provide care at nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospitals. If a patient's care needs are too complicated for home care or require a higher level of attention from nurses and other experts, we can provide care at one of our Hospice Care Centers.
At Bluegrass Care Navigators we are committed to a work setting that treats all team members with fairness, dignity, and respect. We offer our team members an opportunity to grow, to develop professionally, and to work in a team environment. You can help our team make a lasting difference. Join #TeamBCN where your work matters, and your time is valued.
Schedule: Friday Nights 5:00pm - 8:00am, Saturdays 10:00am - 4:00pm, and Sundays 10:00am - 4:00pm
Location: Whitley, Laurel, Clay, and Knox Counties
Incentive: $4.00 per hour on-call shift differential pay for shifts after 5:00pm weeknights and all day for weekend shifts, in addition to base pay
Position Summary:
The Flex/After-Hours Hospice RN delivers compassionate, patient-centered care for individuals receiving comprehensive health care services in a variety of home care settings, including private residences, skilled nursing facilities, personal care homes, or wherever the patient calls home. This hybrid role supports continuity of care outside of regular business hours and provides flexible dayshift coverage based on the evolving needs of the hospice team. These needs may include responding to urgent patient needs, managing symptoms, supporting new admissions, and assisting with ongoing case management. A Registered Nurse in this position will have strong communication skills, the competence to work autonomously, professionalism to work within an interdisciplinary team, and the ability to provide care with empathy. The Flex/After-Hours Hospice RN position offers an ongoing opportunity to make a significant and rewarding difference in patients' lives during a challenging time.
Position Qualifications:
โ€ข Graduate of an accredited school of registered nursing.
โ€ข Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse through the Kentucky Board of Nursing or through a participating Compact State Board of Nursing.
โ€ข Minimum of one (1) year of general nursing experience preferred; new graduate nurses will be considered.
โ€ข Demonstrates strong clinical nursing skills and the ability to maintain professionalism during emotionally challenging situations.
โ€ข Provides compassionate, patient-centered care while serving diverse populations with respect and cultural sensitivity.
โ€ข Adheres to accepted professional, ethical, and legal standards of nursing practice.
โ€ข Demonstrates understanding of and commitment to hospice philosophy and the principles of death and dying.
โ€ข Maintains current CPR certification.
โ€ข Must be a licensed driver with an automobile in good working order, that is insured in accordance with state minimum requirements.
