The primary responsibilities include reviewing prescriptions for accuracy, determining necessary ingredients, and assessing their appropriateness. The role involves providing guidance and information on drug interactions, side effects, dosages, and proper medication storage. In a retail or community pharmacy environment, the Pharmacist interprets and dispenses both prescription and over-the-counter medications to patients. This position requires active engagement in addressing prescription-related concerns and advising healthcare providers on medication selection, dosages, interactions, and potential side effects.

Additionally, the Pharmacist will counsel patients regarding their prescriptions, covering aspects such as proper administration, expected outcomes, possible side effects, storage, and any inquiries from the patient. Monitoring patient health and progress in relation to drug therapy is essential. The ability to adapt to and utilize new technologies as the pharmacy profession evolves is crucial. The role also includes providing oversight and clinical supervision for pharmacy staff and support personnel.

In a medical center or institutional context, the Pharmacist will review and interpret provider orders, offer drug information, assist in problem-solving, and deliver various pharmaceutical care services. Responsibilities may include unit dose dispensing, IV admixtures, outpatient prescriptions, navigating electronic medical records, compounding, and operating automated dispensing devices. The Pharmacist will assess the pharmaceutical needs of patients across different age groups, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations. Adherence to established regulations and standards governing pharmacy practice is mandatory. The role may involve acting as a shift supervisor under the direct or indirect oversight of department managers. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with the ability to learn and implement new technologies as the field progresses.

Pharmacy services may encompass areas such as acute care surgery, neurology, cardiology, pediatrics, oncology, infusion services, intensive care, general medicine, dialysis, transplant, antimicrobial stewardship, and medication reconciliation. Responsibilities may include decentralized clinical functions like direct patient interaction, interdisciplinary team rounding, chart reviews, patient counseling, and maintaining accurate medication lists. Centralized clinical functions may involve checking and dispensing medications and overseeing the clinical operations of the IV room.

• For Retail/Community Pharmacy: Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy with comprehensive knowledge of drugs and their effects, as well as familiarity with state and local regulations.
• For Medical Center/Institutional Setting: Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy with extensive knowledge of drugs and their effects, along with understanding state and local regulations. Hospital experience or completion of a residency is preferred.
• A valid license in good standing from the State Board of Pharmacy in the relevant state(s) is required, along with any necessary multi-state licensure privileges.
