Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and we are looking for the talent that will help expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long-lasting energy future for generations to come. This position is subject to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations at 10 CFR Part 810 (Part 810), which govern the transfer of hardware, materials, and technology to support the construction and operation of commercial nuclear power plants overseas
This position will be responsible for providing technical leadership and oversight of engineering geological, hydrogeological, and groundwater modeling activities performed by project staff, subcontractors, and subject matter experts to support plant licensing and engineering designs. This position is based in our Reston, VA office and has technical responsibility for oversight of geological investigations and laboratory testing, origination and/or checking of geological calculations, development of conceptual ground models, development of groundwater models, preparation of licensing documents, preparation of reports, and preparation of design documents such as specifications, etc. The position reports to the G&HES EGS on the Project and coordinates with other G&HES technical specialists, subcontractors, and client representatives in the development of licensing and design documents. In addition, it will be required that the candidate have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and embrace Bechtel’s diversity & inclusion, leadership, quality, and safety values.
- • Plan, coordinate and prepare specifications, bid evaluations, and award recommendations for subsurface exploration, groundwater monitoring program, and material subcontractors.
• Develop geotechnical/geological/hydrogeological investigation plans and subsequently supervise field investigations.
• Provide recommendations for geophysical surveys meeting site characterization objectives.
• Review geotechnical subcontractor's reports and prepare comments and recommendations.
• Establish technical approaches, methodologies, and acceptance criteria for hydrogeological and geological analyses and deliverables.
• Review technical reports, calculations, specifications, licensing documents, and design inputs prepared by project teams and subcontractors.
• Lead technical reviews of groundwater flow and contaminant transport models and ensure compliance with project quality requirements and licensing commitments.
• Direct and mentor junior hydrogeologists, engineering geologists, and subcontractor personnel.
• Coordinate work between specialty and other engineering groups or disciplines, the client, suppliers, contractors, and other divisional groups.
• Review quantity estimates and staffing requirements for forecasts and change orders.
• Participate in and foster a work environment that is based upon openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
• M.S. in hydrogeology, engineering geology, or other related geosciences discipline, and 8 years progressive related experience, or Ph.D. degree in the same disciplines and 6 years of progressive related experience.
• Must be authorized to live and work in the US without sponsorship.
• Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
- Minimum Qualifications:
• Demonstrated engineering geology and hydrogeology experience supporting major infrastructure, energy, mining, or nuclear projects, including characterization of site geology and groundwater systems
• Proficiency with geology software for aquifer test analyses and groundwater flow and transport models, including but not limited to AQTESOLV, MODFLOW, and MT3D.
• Proficiency in geological and geotechnical data management (e.g., Leapfrog, OpenGround, etc.).
• Professional Geologist (PG) license or equivalent.
• Experience in nuclear plant licensing and design (nuclear power plant or DOE nuclear facility).
• Proficient with word processing, spreadsheet, computer graphics, and other appropriate computer applications to facilitate the compilation and analysis of data collection activities.
• Experience providing technical oversight, quality review, and technical direction for multidisciplinary teams and subcontractors
• Willingness and ability to travel and remain at jobsite for an extended time.
• Curiosity, initiative, sound judgment, and knowledge of the fields of geology and engineering.
• Knowledge of engineering deliverables, such as drawings, specifications, and material requisitions and of construction methods for concrete and steel structures.
• Understands work processes of other disciplines and departments on projects.
• Ability to resolve technical issues with other geologists, suppliers, other engineering disciplines, construction, regulatory agencies, and the client.
• Excellent listening, verbal and written communication, planning, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in hydrogeology, engineering geology, or other related geosciences discipline.
• Publications in technical journals and participation in technical conferences.
• Familiar with Bechtel standard computer programs, Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Design Guides & Standards, and their application to projects.
• Necessary skills to present technical subjects with competence and confidence.
• Experience in resolving field problems.
• Experience with scoping, budgeting, and scheduling of geology activities.
• Experience with AP1000 Nuclear Power Plant Design.
• Prior experience working in a Nuclear Quality and Safety Environment.
Previous Bechtel and/or DOD or DOE project experience.
