Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Cedar Bluff, Virginia, SWCC offers associate's degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate's degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
Adjunct Instructor for Certified Fiber Optics Technician
Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) is seeking a qualified Adjunct Instructor to teach Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT) certification training. This position supports the College's workforce and career training mission by preparing students for entry-level and advanced careers in fiber optics and telecommunications.
Position Summary
The Adjunct Instructor will deliver hands-on and classroom-based instruction aligned with the Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT) curriculum. Instruction may include short-term workforce training, evening or weekend classes, and customized training for industry partners.
Teaching Opportunities: Certified Fiber Optics Instructors are needed to teach Fiber Optics Splicing, Pole Climbing and Safety, or both subject areas. Candidates with expertise in only one area are encouraged to apply. Please indicate your area(s) of interest and qualifications in your letter of application.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Deliver CFOT certification training in accordance with approved curriculum and industry standards
  • Provide hands-on instruction in fiber optics theory, safety, installation, termination, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments
  • Evaluate student performance and maintain accurate records
  • Ensure a safe learning environment, particularly during lab-based activities
  • Maintain current knowledge of fiber optics technologies and workforce trends
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and college administrators

Instructional faculty must reside in the state of Virginia or be available to teach in-person classes at one of the Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) locations (Main Campus, Lebanon, Bluefield, Southern Gap).
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT) certification (required)
  • 5-years non-teaching work experience working in fiber optics, telecommunications, or a related field
