To excel as a Part-Time Family Therapist, you need a relevant degree in counseling, social work, or psychology, along with appropriate state licensure. Familiarity with therapy frameworks (such as CBT or family systems theory) and electronic health record (EHR) systems is commonly required. Exceptional communication, empathy, and conflict-resolution skills help therapists foster trust and facilitate productive family sessions. These competencies ensure effective support for families, leading to healthier relationships and improved mental well-being.

What are some common challenges part-time family support workers face, and how can job seekers prepare for them?

Part-time family support workers often balance multiple families or cases while managing limited hours, which can make prioritizing tasks and maintaining consistent relationships challenging. Additionally, flexibility and adaptability are important, as needs can change quickly and support workers may need to adjust their schedules or responsibilities. Seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues and staying organized can help new hires adapt more easily to these challenges.

Overview

Family Assistant | Part-Time$50+ per hour, depending on experience

A warm, down-to-earth private client based in San Jose, California is seeking a discreet, dependable Family Assistant to support her with day-to-day tasks and household coordination. This is a part-time role, ideal for someone easygoing, low-key, and comfortable working independently with a good amount of initiative.

The client values her privacy and solitude, so the right person will be respectful of that boundary while still being warm, proactive, and attentive to her needs, often before she even has to ask. There is a small child in the home, though no nanny responsibilities will be required; candidates who are naturally warm and comfortable being around children will be the best fit for this role.

The ideal candidate is discreet, adaptable, and comfortable navigating a household with a bit of worldliness and nuance. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone who enjoys variety in their day and takes pride in quietly making someone's life easier.

Schedule

  • Part-time, ideally Monday through Friday, a few hours each morning
    • The client will also consider three days per week
  • 20 hours per week guaranteed to start, with potential to expand over time

Responsibilities

  • Work in-person at the client's home; a dedicated desk workspace is available
  • Sort through mail and deliveries, including unpacking and unboxing items
  • Assist with grocery pick-up and light errands (store pickups, oil changes, etc.)
  • Help manage the client's inbox and day-to-day administrative tasks
  • Make appointments and reservations as requested
  • Oversee scheduling and communications for the household's nanny team, including PTO requests
  • Take initiative in identifying ways to lighten the client's day-to-day load
  • Track renewals, due dates, birthdays, and other important dates, sending reminders to the client
  • Potentially take on larger projects like coordinating contractors for home improvements

Qualifications

  • Must have a minimum of 5+ years of experience as a Family Assistant
  • Legally authorized to work in the US
  • Local candidates only
  • Easygoing, low-key personality with a genuine respect for privacy and boundaries
  • Highly discreet and comfortable working within a private home
  • Strong initiative and ability to anticipate needs without being asked
  • Comfortable communicating and collaborating with household team members
  • Down-to-earth and discreet; comfortable adapting to whatever the day brings
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Willing to undergo a background check and provide strong references
