F1 students are generally allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during the academic term and full-time during holidays, but only in on-campus jobs or specific off-campus roles authorized by USCIS, such as CPT or OPT. What does a part time F1 do?

As a Part Time F1 Doctor, you can expect to work a portion of the hours of a full-time Foundation Year 1 Doctor, often involving a mix of weekday, weekend, and sometimes evening or night shifts, depending on the department's needs. Your key responsibilities include clinical assessments, managing patient clerking and documentation, prescribing medication under supervision, and liaising with senior doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Part-time arrangements may offer greater flexibility for work-life balance, but you will still be integrated into a multidisciplinary team and participate in essential ward duties and handovers. This structure provides valuable firsthand experience in diverse medical specialties while allowing more personalized scheduling.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a part time F1?

To thrive as a Part Time F1 (Foundation Year 1 Doctor), you need a recognized medical degree, provisional registration with the GMC, and solid clinical knowledge. Familiarity with NHS electronic medical records, prescribing systems, and hospital protocols is typical for this role. Strong communication, teamwork, and time-management skills help navigate shift work and interdisciplinary patient care. These attributes are vital for delivering safe and effective patient treatment while managing varied clinical responsibilities in a busy healthcare environment.

Can a part time F1 student do a part-time job?

Part time F1 students are generally allowed to work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic term and full-time during breaks, but off-campus employment requires prior authorization through Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT). It is important to follow USCIS regulations and maintain full-time student status to remain eligible for the visa.
