Type: Part-time

Start: February 2026

About Solar One

Solar One is a 501c(3) organization that empowers communities in the New York City metro area to thrive in the face of the challenges brought on by climate change and embrace a world that is low-carbon, resource-efficient, and socially inclusive.

Founded in 2004 to manage Stuyvesant Cove Park, a two-acre native plant park and small environmental education center, Solar One has grown into an award-winning organization with a thriving array of programs. Solar One's mission is to design and deliver innovative education, training, and technical assistance that fosters sustainability and resiliency in diverse urban environments. We empower learning that changes how people think about energy, sustainability, and resilience by engaging and educating diverse stakeholders and beneficiaries.

Job Summary

Solar One is seeking part-time environmental educators to deliver field trips at our new Environmental Education Center in Manhattan (S1EEC). Field trips audiences are typically NYCPS students in grades 3-12 and focus on hands-on lessons such as solar circuits, wind turbine design, building non-toxic batteries, and green building design. We are also constructing an outdoor learning garden in Stuyvesant Cove Park, which will enable us to teach community and water ecology field trips starting in Fall 2026.

The Part-time Educators will teach field trips and, potentially, STEM-focused afterschool programs on-site and off-site across NYC. The schedule is flexible based on the Educator's availability and could be 3-4 days per week in the spring, with the option to transition to a full-time schedule starting June 2026. This position is primarily in person, reporting to S1EEC or an off-site location. The schedule is mostly Mon-Fri, with occasional Saturday programs once per month.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Teaching Solar One's curriculum to students in grades 3-12 at S1EEC during field trips.

  • Occasionally, teaching off-site at libraries, schools, or community centers. Travel around NYC is required.

  • Teaching summer programming in NYC. Summer enrichment programs typically take place at NYC schools and last 2 to 6 weeks.

  • Teaching and co-developing family programming at S1EEC.

  • Assisting with S1EEC community outreach, including occasional marketing and tabling.

  • Assisting with data collection and analysis as part of upcoming citizen science programming.

  • Curriculum writing and revisions as needed.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree required in education, STEM, or environmental field.

  • 2-5 years of work experience teaching in formal or non-formal settings.

  • Knowledge of soil and plant ecology is highly desired.

  • Experience working with children in underserved urban communities.

  • Knowledge of climate, sustainability, science, and the environment.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Strong customer service skills.

  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Google Suite, including Calendar, Docs, Spreadsheet, and Drive.

Pay, Hours, and Work Schedule

  • This is a part-time hourly position

  • 28 hours per week ( Flexible schedule)

  • Rate is $40/hr.
