These jobs can involve conducting inspections, educating the public, monitoring environmental hazards, or assisting with compliance and regulatory efforts. Part time roles are often available with government agencies, non-profits, or private companies, and may offer flexible scheduling to accommodate other commitments. Job description

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION Start or expand your environmental career at the City of San Marcos' Watershed Program. Are you looking for hands-on experience in environmental regulation. Join our team as a Part-Time Watershed Inspector.

This isn't just a role-it's a chance to build your resume and gain technical field experience while directly protecting our local water quality. You'll spend the majority of your time in the field, where you'll play a key role in following up on community concerns and helping resolve stormwater pollution concerns. Working under the direction of the Watershed Program Manager and supervision of the Watershed Administrator, you will be a vital part of the team assisting in the implementation of the City's Stormwater Municipal Code.

WHY JOIN US. Flexible Scheduling: We understand that life is busy. Whether you are balancing a degree, family, or other projects, we offer a flexible part-time schedule designed to work around your commitments.

Resume-Building Experience: Gain direct, "boots-on-the-ground" experience in municipal government and stormwater regulation. Work Outdoors: Swap the cubicle for the outdoors. A Watershed Inspector will be primarily responsible for field duties.

WHAT YOU'LL DO Field Investigations (Primary): Perform patrols and investigations related to the Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE) program. Respond to and document watershed concerns reported by the public or internal staff. Schedule and perform follow-up inspections to ensure continued environmental health.

Verify inventories for Structural Best Management Practices (SBMPs). Participate in occasional weekend outreach events to connect with the community. Data, Excel & Office Support (Occasional): Maintain inventories and databases for permit tracking requirements, utilize Excel to analyze numerical data and organize it for management review.

Prepare enforcement correspondence in accordance with the City's Enforcement Response Plan. Draft or update written Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Watershed Program. Assist with the development and review of public education, outreach, and training materials.

Community Collaboration: Build positive working relationships with co-workers and the public using excellent customer service. HOURS REQUIRED While flexible based on the candidate's personal schedule, the successful candidate will work an average of 20 hours per week. As a part-time employee, the Watershed Inspector may work up to 999 hours per fiscal year.

Scheduled hours will depend upon the Department's need and budget approval.
