What is part time engineering?

Part time engineering refers to engineering positions that require fewer working hours than a standard full-time job, typically offering flexible schedules. These roles may be ideal for students, parents, retirees, or those seeking additional work-life balance. Part-time engineers perform many of the same duties as full-time engineers, such as designing, analyzing, or maintaining systems, but on a reduced schedule. This arrangement can be found in various engineering fields, including civil, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time engineer?

To thrive as a Part Time Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or coursework in your specific discipline. Familiarity with industry-standard design software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), data analysis tools, and sometimes certifications like EIT or FE are typically beneficial. Strong time management, communication, and teamwork skills help you efficiently balance project demands and collaborate effectively in limited working hours. These competencies ensure you can contribute meaningful results and maintain productivity within a flexible or reduced schedule.

What are some common challenges faced by part time engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Part-time engineers often face challenges such as balancing multiple responsibilities, staying updated with project changes, and maintaining effective communication with full-time team members. To address these issues, it's important to establish clear expectations with supervisors, use collaborative tools for project tracking, and proactively schedule regular check-ins with the team. Adopting these practices can help part-time engineers stay engaged and ensure their contributions align with overall project goals.

Job description

Van Driver (Part-Time) - Denver, CO
College Track | Denver Office • 4777 National Western Drive $20-$30/hour • Part-Time, Non-Exempt • 3-8 PM, Monday-Thursday
College Track is looking for a Van Driver who understands that every trip behind the wheel is really a trip toward someone's future. You'll be the steady, reliable face scholars count on to get them safely from school to programming, from programming home, and - every once in a while - on the road to tour the campus where their story continues.
This isn't just a driving gig. It's a front-row seat to the college journey of first-generation, underrepresented students working to become the first in their families to earn a bachelor's degree.
Who We Are
College Track has spent nearly 30 years proving what's possible when talent meets opportunity. Since 1997, we've grown from 25 students in East Palo Alto to a national movement of 5,400+ scholars and alumni across California, Colorado, Louisiana, and the D.C. Metro Area - with a brand-new site launching in Baltimore.
The results speak for themselves: our scholars graduate at three times the national average for first-generation students, and by age 30, our alumni out-earn the national median. We're not just getting students to college - we're getting them through it, and into lives of opportunity, choice, purpose, and power.
What You'll Do
Get Scholars Where They Need to Be
  • Pick students up after school and drive them safely to the College Track site
  • Pick students up after programming and get them to their drop-off point - staying with them until they're safely handed off
  • Drive scholars to college tours and off-site events (occasional evenings/weekends, always with advance notice)

Keep Everyone in the Loop
  • Send a quick Slack or text reminder before each pickup so no one's left wondering

Pitch In Where Needed
  • Run time-sensitive errands during the gaps between drives
What You Bring
  • A driver's heart and a mentor's mindset. First and foremost, you're a fierce advocate for helping students overcome real barriers on the road to a degree.
  • 2+ years of experience driving a van or shuttle
  • 2 years of experience working with students
  • Punctuality - students should never be left waiting
  • Availability 3-8 PM, Monday-Thursday, across 13 weeks of fall programming and 13 weeks of spring programming
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to pass College Track's driver clearance process
  • Physical readiness for the role: sitting, standing, walking, lifting up to 20 lbs, and the visual/motor demands of safe driving
Why You'll Love It Here
  • $20-$30/hour
  • Full access to College Track's wellness-focused benefits: health care, work-life balance, and financial security
Interested?
We especially encourage first-generation college graduates to apply. College Track is proud to be an equal-opportunity employer, committed to a diverse workforce and free from discrimination on the basis of race, age, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender, disability, veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression.
