What is part time engineering?

Part time engineering refers to engineering positions that require fewer working hours than a standard full-time job, typically offering flexible schedules. These roles may be ideal for students, parents, retirees, or those seeking additional work-life balance. Part-time engineers perform many of the same duties as full-time engineers, such as designing, analyzing, or maintaining systems, but on a reduced schedule. This arrangement can be found in various engineering fields, including civil, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time engineer?

To thrive as a Part Time Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or coursework in your specific discipline. Familiarity with industry-standard design software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), data analysis tools, and sometimes certifications like EIT or FE are typically beneficial. Strong time management, communication, and teamwork skills help you efficiently balance project demands and collaborate effectively in limited working hours. These competencies ensure you can contribute meaningful results and maintain productivity within a flexible or reduced schedule.

What are some common challenges faced by part time engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Part-time engineers often face challenges such as balancing multiple responsibilities, staying updated with project changes, and maintaining effective communication with full-time team members. To address these issues, it's important to establish clear expectations with supervisors, use collaborative tools for project tracking, and proactively schedule regular check-ins with the team. Adopting these practices can help part-time engineers stay engaged and ensure their contributions align with overall project goals.

Job description

Position Overview: The Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West Hotel in Plymouth, MN, is looking to add a couple of strong team members to our engineering department. We currently have a full-time opening focused on nights and weekends, as well as a part-time position that will help provide coverage where needed. This is a hands-on role for someone who can work independently, stay productive, and take ownership of their responsibilities while helping keep the hotel running smoothly. Pay will be based on experience.

Hotel Maintenance Technician

The Hotel Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining guest rooms, public areas, and building systems to ensure a safe, comfortable, and well-functioning environment for guests and team members. This position performs preventative maintenance, responds to maintenance requests, and assists with repairs involving HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general building upkeep. Successful candidates must be self-starters who can work independently, prioritize tasks, and take initiative without constant direction. A positive attitude, strong work ethic, reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to work professionally with guests and fellow team members are essential to success in this role. Candidates must also be dependable, accountable, and willing to take ownership of their work while contributing to a team-oriented environment.

Previous hotel maintenance experience is preferred but not required, and we are willing to train the right candidate who demonstrates a strong work ethic and willingness to learn. Experience working in a fast-paced environment and responding to maintenance issues efficiently is highly valued. A Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification and boiler license are preferred but not required. Candidates should be comfortable managing multiple priorities, completing tasks in a timely manner, and maintaining high standards of quality while minimizing disruption to hotel operations and guest experiences.
