What is part time engineering?

Part time engineering refers to engineering positions that require fewer working hours than a standard full-time job, typically offering flexible schedules. These roles may be ideal for students, parents, retirees, or those seeking additional work-life balance. Part-time engineers perform many of the same duties as full-time engineers, such as designing, analyzing, or maintaining systems, but on a reduced schedule. This arrangement can be found in various engineering fields, including civil, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time engineer?

To thrive as a Part Time Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or coursework in your specific discipline. Familiarity with industry-standard design software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), data analysis tools, and sometimes certifications like EIT or FE are typically beneficial. Strong time management, communication, and teamwork skills help you efficiently balance project demands and collaborate effectively in limited working hours. These competencies ensure you can contribute meaningful results and maintain productivity within a flexible or reduced schedule.

What are some common challenges faced by part time engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Part-time engineers often face challenges such as balancing multiple responsibilities, staying updated with project changes, and maintaining effective communication with full-time team members. To address these issues, it's important to establish clear expectations with supervisors, use collaborative tools for project tracking, and proactively schedule regular check-ins with the team. Adopting these practices can help part-time engineers stay engaged and ensure their contributions align with overall project goals.

What is the difference between Part Time Engineering vs Part Time Engineering Technician?

AspectPart Time EngineeringPart Time Engineering Technician
Required CredentialsEngineering degree or courseworkTechnical diploma or associate degree in engineering technology
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, project planningTesting, troubleshooting, equipment maintenance

We are seeking an experienced Senior Maritime Engineer to support engineering, technical, and operational efforts for U.S. Navy and Department of Defense (DoD) customers. The ideal candidate will bring demonstrated experience supporting Navy maritime programs, systems, vessels, waterfront operations, or related engineering initiatives.

This position will provide technical expertise across the planning, development, integration, testing, sustainment, and execution of complex maritime engineering efforts. The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a multidisciplinary environment and collaborating with Government customers, engineers, program managers, operational personnel, subcontractors, and other technical stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering and technical support for U.S. Navy maritime, waterfront, and ocean engineering programs and projects.
  • Support the planning, design, development, integration, testing, evaluation, installation, operation, maintenance, and/or sustainment of maritime systems and equipment.
  • Apply engineering principles to evaluate technical requirements, identify solutions, resolve engineering challenges, and support informed technical decision-making.
  • Review and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, technical data packages, calculations, procedures, manuals, and other technical documentation.
  • Support development and review of engineering designs, concepts, analyses, plans, and technical deliverables.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical interchange meetings, readiness reviews, test events, and other engineering and programmatic reviews.
  • Support system integration, test and evaluation (T&E), verification and validation, troubleshooting, and operational readiness activities.
  • Coordinate engineering activities involving vessels, waterfront infrastructure, maritime equipment, test assets, lifting and handling equipment, or other specialized systems, as applicable.
  • Identify technical risks, constraints, interfaces, and dependencies and assist in developing appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Support configuration management and ensure engineering changes and technical documentation are appropriately controlled and maintained.
  • Interface directly with Navy and DoD customers to understand mission requirements and translate operational needs into executable engineering solutions.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, equipment manufacturers, vendors, shipyards, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Support development of technical reports, engineering analyses, cost estimates, schedules, work plans, and other project documentation.
  • Provide on-site engineering and technical support during testing, installation, maintenance, repair, field operations, or other mission activities as required.
  • Ensure engineering activities are performed in accordance with applicable Navy, DoD, industry, safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated professional engineering experience supporting U.S. Navy, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC), Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), or other Navy/DoD maritime organizations or programs.
  • Significant experience supporting maritime, naval, ocean, waterfront, vessel, undersea, or marine engineering efforts.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles, technical documentation, design review processes, system integration, testing, and engineering change management.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering and operational teams in complex technical environments.
  • Ability to independently evaluate technical problems and develop practical, mission-focused solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop and review professional engineering documentation and technical deliverables.
  • Ability to travel to Navy installations, shipyards, waterfront facilities, test sites, or other Government locations as required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any Government security clearance or installation access required for assigned work.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Naval Architecture, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Systems Engineering, or another relevant engineering or technical discipline preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, specialized technical training, and significant directly relevant Navy/maritime engineering experience may be considered.
  • 10+ years of relevant engineering experience preferred, including substantial experience supporting Navy, DoD, maritime, or naval engineering programs.

  • Experience working directly with Government technical leads, engineers, program managers, and operational personnel.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or other relevant engineering certifications are desirable but not required.

Desired Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be an experienced engineer who understands both the technical and operational realities of supporting Navy maritime missions. We are particularly interested in candidates who can move effectively between engineering analysis and real-world execution—someone who can review a technical design, identify potential risks or integration issues, communicate effectively with the customer, and support implementation in a waterfront, vessel, test, or field environment.
