Job Summary The Endoscopy Technician II has an in-depth knowledge of GI and assists the nurses and physicians in providing care for the endoscopy patient. They have completed competencies for all basic GI procedures and are competent in all aspects of scope reprocessing. The Technician also supports the area with duties that include, but are not limited to, preparation of the procedure room and sterile field to ensure a safe patient care environment including gathering all required instruments and supplies and serving as an endoscopy procedure assistant. The job also includes transportation of patients and equipment, stocking/maintaining supplies, care and maintenance of endoscopes and their accessories contributing to the daily functions of the unit. Exhibits a higher level of collaboration with all members of the Wellstar health care team. Has a strong understanding of infection control in the GI setting. Assists with maintaining supplies and equipment under the direction of a manager/supervisor. If being promoted, must receive a 3 or higher on last performance review. Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions Proficiency of all endoscope procedures, equipment, and supplies including more complex, high risk procedures (including ERCP, EUS, and Wall stent placement). Fulfills all essential functions of the GI Lab Technician. Functions in all areas of the GI lab. Prepares for scheduled, emergent, urgent and add on endoscopic procedures by insuring necessary equipment, instruments and supplies are ready and set up for use. Has the skill to expedite and organize the preparation for unexpected events, giving direction and support to the less experienced team members. Functions independently within scope of position. Anticipates needs of physician and RN during procedures; and anticipates needs of department. Demonstrates an advanced level of knowledge and competence for more complex procedures (ERCP, EUS, stent placements). Serves as resource person for less experienced staff and is the preferred technician for complex procedures. Must be proficient to operate all equipment in GI, and provide technical assistance during procedures by trouble shooting equipment as needed, manipulating various pieces of equipment and the endoscope as directed by the physician. Required to take emergency call after normal operating hours and weekends rotation per department needs. Serves as a preceptor to new employees and a resource for other less experienced team members. Demonstrates in depth knowledge of infection control principles and standards. Takes a proactive role in QI monitoring and improvement plans. Demonstrates effective and professional communication skills. Works as a collaborative team member. Assists with the planning of daily assignments and distribution of work to promote department efficiency. Assists in the trial and evaluation of new equipment and supplies. Functions in a manner that is aligned with Wellstars pillar goals for quality care, patient satisfaction, professional standards, scope of the law, cost containment, efficiency and safety and quality. Maintains confidentiality. Supports evidence based practice and ethical accountability. Maintains current BLS certification. Maintain SGNA certification. Performs other duties as assigned. Complies with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct. Required Minimum Education High School Diploma General or GED General Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s) All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated. SGNA-GTS - SGNA GI Tech Specialist BLS - Basic Life Support or ARC-BLS - Amer Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor Additional License(s) and Certification(s) Pass SGNA Associates and SGNA advanced course exams. Required Minimum Experience Minimum 1 year 1-2 years Endoscopy experience Required and Successful completion of on-the-job training with documentation of orientation and all competencies met (specific competencies determined by facility of employment), Supports and attends professional activities. Required and Must enroll and attend at least one leadership development class per year. Required Minimum Skills Ability to read, write and speak the English language. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills. BCLS required. Ability to collaborate with other health care providers in the provision of patient care. Competency in all aspects of GI procedures, patient positioning, exposure factors and radiation protection. Ability to delegate to other team members as required. Ability to multi-task is essential: Ability to function in stressful and emergent situations essential. Strong detail orientation required. Proficiency in all GI procedures required, with emphasis on EUS and ERCP cases. Ability to function as preceptor to other GI techs required. Computer skills may be required.
