Job Summaryย

Entry-level positionย for the dental assistant role which isย responsible forย performing allย theย delegableย clinical dental assisting duties listed in Florida Statutes 466 and Administrative Rules 64B-5, including but not limited to screening and preparing patients for treatment, assistingย hygienist/dentists in treating patients, educating patients, and processing instruments, with adherence to HIPAA, CDC,ย and OSHA standards.ย ย Teamย members areย involved inย continualย training.ย 

Qualifications and Requirementsย 

  • Education and Training:ย ย 

  • High School diploma or GEDย required.ย 

  • Successful completion of an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant Certificate (EFDA)ย Training courseย from an Accredited Dental Assistant school or training program,ย including dental radiology,ย isย required.ย ย ย 

  • Current BLS certificateย from nationally recognized organizations that include hands-on skills verification. Online-only or non-recognized certifications are not accepted.ย ย ย 

  • Nitrous oxide certificationย isย preferred or willing to obtain within 12 months of hire.ย 

  • Must have a valid Florida Driverโ€™s license and have a reliable form of transportation.ย 

  • Experience:ย ย 

  • Noย dental assistant experienceย required, yet preference will be given to candidates with experience and or training.ย 

  • Experience working with childrenย isย a plus.ย ย 

  • Experience dealing with underserved populations and culturalย competencyย a plus.ย ย ย 

  • Behavioral Management: Experience working with children and comfortable working with patients of all ages preferredย orย willing to train.ย 

  • Cultural Competency:ย  Experience dealing with underserved populations and ability to relate to patients of all religions, ethnical and cultural backgroundsย preferred.ย 

  • Good Communication Skills: Mustย have good people skills and communicate following the HFHC Core Values.ย ย

  • Competent in General Office Skillsย such as computers (Microsoft Office products, EHRย i.e.ย eCW), faxes, telephones, and copy machines.ย ย 

  • Teamwork:ย  Must be team-oriented andย maintainย an effective and positive professional working relationship with all clinical and nonclinical staff, including but not limited to other Dental Assistants, Patient Service Representative, Senior Dental Staff, Dental Practice Manager, Hygienists, Dentists andย Dental Director.ย ย 

  • Proactive Attitude: Must be willing to train inย additionalย duties and expanded functions to grow professionally within the organization.ย 

  • Flexibility and Attendance: Must be able to work flexible hours and at various sites as needed or assigned by the Dental Practice Manager and COO.ย 

  • Bilingualย a plus:ย  Spanish speaker preferred.ย ย 

Essential Functionsย 

  • Chairside dental assisting tasks asย allowedย by the Florida Statutes and Administrative Rulesย as well as:ย 

  • Identifyย patientsย usingย Double Identifiers โ€“ย i.e.,ย name and birth date.ย ย 

  • Document patientsโ€™ chief complaints in their patientโ€™s own words.ย 

  • Collects and recordsย medical history,ย list of medications and allergies, surgeries,ย hospitalization,ย and social/dental historyย records.ย 

  • Obtainย and record in medical record patientย vitals, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and or glucose levels (when applicable),ย height, and weightย as needed.ย 

  • Operates dentalย X-rayย equipment andย takesย diagnostic dentalย X-raysย as prescribed byย the dentist.ย ย 

  • Handleย dentalย instruments,ย including cleaning/oiling, bagging, sterilization/disinfection, and re-circulation following OSHA and CDC standards.ย 

  • Assistsย in educating patientsย and parents/guardiansย regardingย oral hygiene, treatmentย optionsย andย plans,ย dental consentย and provides witnessย signaturesย prior to specialty procedures.ย ย 

  • Assistย the dentist through 4-handed dentistry, includingย suction,ย handling dentalย materials,ย and transferring instruments.ย ย 

  • Performs preventative dental treatment including but not limited to clinical crown polishing, tooth flossing, sealant, and fluoride placement as delegated by the supervising dentist.ย 

  • Performs operatory disinfection before and after dental procedures.ย 

  • Recordsย accurateย dental charting of existing restorations, new dental caries, and planned restorations.ย 

  • Recordsย dictated dental andย periodontal charting as needed for patients >18 years of age.ย ย 

  • Assistsย the dentist in completion of dental exam and procedure documentation and closes procedure codes atย the endย of each visit.ย 

  • Completes any necessary paperwork/data entryย requiredย intoย eCWย medicalย record.ย 

  • Assistsย in patient scheduling.ย 

  • Perform follow up phone calls.ย 

  • Flexible to work with various providers and dental assistants as needed.ย 

  • Presents treatment plans prepared by the dentist and obtains patientย and/orย parent signatures.ย ย 

  • Provide patient education, including oral hygiene and post-operative instructions.ย 

  • Prepares, scans, and or faxes referral, medical clearance, and other forms as needed.ย 

  • Proactivelyย participatesย in patient care to ensure office efficiency and productivity.ย 

  • Assistsย withย maintenance of theย office inventory,ย dental equipmentย and logsย as instructed by dental practice manager, assigned dentist orย Dental Direcotr.ย ย 

  • May be required to travel toย other HFHC locations as needed.ย 

  • Assistsย with other clinical and officeย dutiesย assignedย byย theย supervising dentist, dental practice manager, and/orย COO.ย 

Physical Requirementsย 

  • Must be able toย lift upย toย 50 pounds.ย 

  • Must be able to stand or sit chairside for extended periods of time.ย 

  • Must have manual dexterityย to allow for the handling of specialized dental equipment.ย 

  • Must haveย clearย vision to allow inspection of instruments for cleanliness,ย residueย or defects.ย
