What is a part time design job?

Part time design jobs are positions in the design field—such as graphic design, web design, or interior design—that require fewer hours than a standard full-time job, often ranging from 10 to 30 hours per week. These roles allow for a flexible schedule, making them ideal for students, freelancers, or individuals seeking work-life balance. Part time designers may work on specific projects, collaborate with a team, or assist full-time designers with ongoing tasks. These jobs can be found in various industries, including advertising, marketing, technology, and retail.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a part time designer?

To thrive as a Part Time Designer, you need a solid grasp of design principles, proficiency in visual communication, and typically a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or Sketch is often expected, and a strong portfolio can be a critical credential. Creativity, time management, and adaptability are standout soft skills for managing diverse projects and client expectations on a flexible schedule. These abilities ensure you can deliver high-quality, impactful designs efficiently while meeting varied client or employer needs.

How do part-time design roles typically integrate with full-time design teams and ongoing projects?

Part-time designers often collaborate closely with full-time team members by attending key meetings, using shared project management tools, and participating in regular feedback sessions. Clear communication and well-defined deliverables help ensure that part-time contributors stay aligned with project goals and timelines. While schedules may be more flexible, part-time designers are still expected to meet deadlines and maintain the quality standards set by the team. They may also have the opportunity to take on specialized tasks or support multiple projects based on the team's needs.

After you apply to this job, you can share why you’re interested to jump to the top of the candidate list.

Key responsibilities

  • Help create an exceptional guest experience across boutique, café, gallery, and hospitality spaces by assisting guests, preparing beverages and food, and maintaining the environment.

  • Assist with merchandise displays, replenish products, process purchases, and help with receiving and stocking merchandise in the boutique and gallery.

  • Take and fulfill guest orders, prepare and serve coffee, beverages, and light food, and maintain cleanliness and organization in the café and hospitality areas.

Job description

At Joy & Wylde, we believe the best sales experience begins by creating a place people genuinely enjoy being, an experience that encourages people to explore, discover, linger and enjoy themselves. Sales follow naturally when we do that exceptionally well.

We are looking for a part-time Retail & Hospitality Associate who shares that philosophy and genuinely enjoys meeting people and making them feel welcome & well cared for.

The Role

The Retail & Hospitality Associate works across Joy & Wylde's boutique, café, gallery and riverside hospitality spaces, helping create an exceptional experience for every guest.

This is a varied, hands-on position. During the course of a day, you might help someone discover the perfect piece of jewelry, prepare a cappuccino, talk with a visitor about a local artist, serve lunch and wine on the riverside lawn, wrap a gift, refresh a merchandise display or simply make someone feel especially welcome.

The ideal candidate is warm, engaging and attentive, with a natural instinct for hospitality and an appreciation for beautiful things and beautiful environments.

The Guest Experience

Your most important responsibility is helping create an environment people love being in.

That includes:

  • Shopping & discovery: Welcoming guests into the boutique and gallery, learning what interests them and helping them discover artwork, jewelry, home décor, gifts and artisan-made products.
  • Café & dining: Preparing and serving coffee, specialty beverages, café food, wine, beer and cocktails with warmth and attention to presentation.
  • Relaxation & hospitality: Helping make our riverside lawn and gathering spaces places where guests feel comfortable lingering over a drink, lunch, conversation or afternoon by the river.
  • Service: Making every guest feel genuinely welcomed and cared for, whether they're purchasing a cup of coffee, looking for a special gift or considering a significant piece of art.

Great hospitality requires paying attention. We want someone who notices when a guest needs assistance, when a table needs attention, when a display could look better or when there is an opportunity to make someone's visit a little more special.

Boutique & Gallery

Joy & Wylde is highly curated, and our associates should be curious about the things we sell and enthusiastic about sharing them with others.

You'll:

  • Welcome and assist boutique & gallery customers.
  • Learn about our artists, makers, products and their stories.
  • Help customers select gifts, jewelry, home décor, artwork and other merchandise.
  • Practice thoughtful, consultative selling rather than high-pressure sales.
  • Process purchases and carefully package and wrap merchandise.
  • Replenish products and maintain displays.
  • Help receive, price and stock merchandise.
  • Keep the boutique and gallery beautiful, organized and inviting.

You don't need to arrive knowing everything about art, jewelry or design. You do need to be curious and interested in learning.

Café & Hospitality

You'll also be an active member of our café and hospitality team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Taking and fulfilling guest orders.
    • Preparing coffee and specialty beverages.
    • Preparing and serving café food and light dining.
    • Serving wine, beer and cocktails when legally permitted.
    • Delivering food and beverages to guests indoors and on the riverside lawn.
  • Maintaining high standards for food and beverage presentation.
  • Clearing and resetting tables and hospitality areas.
  • Restocking café products and supplies.
  • Maintaining a clean, organized and attractive café.
  • Assisting with opening and closing procedures.
  • Following food-safety and alcohol-service requirements.

Prior café, restaurant or barista experience is helpful, but we're happy to teach the right person.

Sales

Hospitality comes first, but helping guests buy things they'll enjoy is an important part of the job.

We don't believe in hovering over customers or pressuring them to make a purchase.

Instead, we expect our team to engage guests, ask questions, understand what interests them, make thoughtful suggestions and know enough about our products to help customers make confident choices.
