Job description


St. Francis Center (SFC), an institution of the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado, was established in June 1983. SFC is a refuge for adults who are homeless in the metro Denver area. Our programs and services focus on daytime shelter, social services, health and wellness, housing, employment, and outreach.

We are currently looking for at least one part-time Day Center Staff member (approximately 16-24 hours per week). This is a non-exempt position, and full-time employees are eligible for benefits as outlined below.


POSITION OVERVIEW

As a Day Center staff member, this position includes weekday, weekend and holiday shifts inside the Day Center, which provides emergency day shelter and services to persons experiencing homelessness. Day Center staff work as a team with other staff and volunteers to implement the day center’s mission of providing a safe, peaceful, clean, and respectful environment where guests can meet their basic needs and access supportive services to work towards housing.


Job Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned):

Direct Care and Services

• Greet day center clients and others as they enter the building

• Provide relevant information and referrals for shelter guests

• Provide/monitor direct services (showers, clothing room, storage and mail, etc.)

• Train new staff, interns and volunteers in various day center stations as needed

• Uphold policies/standards that govern shelter activity; maintain high standards related to safety, efficient service provision, guest care, and shelter cleanliness

• Work with other Day Center team members to handle crisis situations including medical emergencies, conflict and fights among guests, confronting agitated or inappropriate guests, providing appropriate back-up to team members and volunteers, etc

Other Duties and Requirements 

• Sort mail

• Perform cleaning duties including laundry, end of day cleaning, etc.

• Purge items left overnight according to shelter policy

• Perform weekly storage purge as assigned

• Participate in daily shift change meeting including discussing incidents, typing daily

notes, recording guest time-outs and/or conditions to return, etc.

• May participate in organizational or departmental workgroup(s) or subcommittee(s)

• May train to provide intake services, to assist clients in pursuing employment or housing, or in other services provided by SFC

• May perform additional assignments and responsibilities (“desk duties”) which may include one or multiple of the following: supervisory role, administrative tasks, assisting other departments, etc.


Requirements/Qualifications:

· Associate or bachelor’s degree and/or 2 - 3 years experience working with vulnerable populations preferred.

· Ability to work with people and offer respectful customer service.

· Prior work experience in a shelter environment and/or with persons experiencing homelessness/addictions/mental health challenges preferred.

· Ability to work with people who may be experiencing difficult life trauma and might be showing signs of that trauma in their actions and communication.

· Ability to de-escalate individuals experiencing a crisis, or willingness to learn and develop effective de-escalation skills.

· Ability to listen to community members’ needs.

· Strong professional boundaries.

· Willingness to participate in SFC trainings to complement services in a trauma-informed manner.

· Basic computer skills necessary, and familiarity with Microsoft Office programs a plus.


Compensation and Benefits:

$21-$23/hour

This is a non-exempt position.
