Reports To:

 

         School Nurse or Principal as needed for specific duties/daily routines

 

Qualifications:

 

         Willing to be CPR/First Aid Certified

 

         Willing to be medication certified

 

         Heart for caring and mentoring to all students

 

         Ability to maintain confidentiality

 

         Ability to remain calm in stressful situations

 

         Ability to quickly assess student needs and prioritize needs

 

         High school diploma or equivalent

   

Job Description:

 

Health Assistant Substitutes needed periodically at school buildings 8.5 hour days, $13.18/hour

 

1.       Provides basic health care and first aid to students

 

         Acts as first responder in medical situation

 

         Contacts parents of ill or injured students in accordance with school/health policies and if needed to prepare students to go home

 

         Follows up on all Incident Reports with parents of students to check progress, health of child

 

         Allows students to express emotional issues, talks with students to reassure and counsel

 

         Contacts the School Nurse in case of major illness or serious injury, hospitalization, communicable diseases, repeated absences and repeated office visits

 

         Educations students about their bodies/health as appropriate

 

         All medical information and all visits to the nurses office as well as phone calls from parents/physicians entered into computers

 

         Documents all care according to school policies and State of Colorado standards

 

         Communicates effectively with School Nurse, staff and parents regarding health care needs and concerns for the purpose of referring students in need of further medical/dental treatment

 

         Communicate with school office staff and be a team player in your office 

 

1.        Assists with Health Care Plans, Health Records, and Emergency Cards

 

         Distributes health lists to appropriate staff, maintaining confidentiality

 

         Provides lists to Nurse routinely

 

         Maintains and updates emergency cards and health records

 

2.       Annually checks immunization records on all students

 

         Enters data in health folders and computer system, contacts parents with information missing/needed

 

         Maintains a listing of students with exemptions and reason for exemption by name grade

 

         Reports given to School Nurse

 

3.       Dispense medication according to school policies and State of Colorado standards

 

         Maintains and stores student prescription medications 

 

         Records and documents using appropriate paperwork

 

         Completes incident reports when needed

 

         Ensures all students receive prescribed medication on a day to day basis IN a confidential manner (may need to retrieve the student)

 

4.       Keeps medications, first aid supplies and health room clean and orderly

 

         Routinely checks emergency supplies, restocks as needed

 

         Maintains medications for occasional staff use

 

5.       Clerical and Data entry as needed

 

6.       Updates CPR/First Aid certifications for self

 

7.       Assists with Health Services projects as needed, assisting the School Nurse

 

         Vision and hearing screenings: assist with organizing needed forms, sending emails to staff as needed, assisting with letters to parents and teachers

 

         Maintains Screening lists - New students, parent or teacher request, K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, & 9th

 

         Maintains list of absent students for make-up screening or to be screened the following year

 

8.       Studies and reads current laws and news to provide the best possible care for staff and students, strives to be informed to provide best services to parents, staff and students

 

9.       Performs specialized treatments as delegated by the School Nurse (e.g. catheterization, blood sugar tests, gastrostomy-tube feedings) for the purpose of providing for and monitoring students' medical needs and/or testing
