What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Cybersecurity Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Cybersecurity Specialist, you need a solid understanding of network security, risk assessment, and incident response, often backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with security tools like firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and certifications such as CompTIA Security+ or CISSP are highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help you identify threats and collaborate effectively. These skills and qualities are essential to protect organizational assets and ensure compliance with security standards, even in a limited-hours role.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time cybersecurity professionals and how can they be addressed?

Part-time cybersecurity professionals often face the challenge of staying current with rapidly evolving threats and technologies while working limited hours. Balancing workload and ensuring effective communication with full-time team members can also be difficult, as security incidents may arise outside scheduled shifts. To address these challenges, it's important to prioritize continuous learning through online resources, maintain clear documentation, and establish strong collaboration routines with the team. Leveraging automation tools and participating in regular security briefings can also help maximize impact within limited hours.

Cyber Commercial Strategist
The Opportunity:
As a Cyber Commercial Strategist, you'll sit at the intersection of commercial technology and government mission, translating the best of what the startup and venture ecosystem has to offer into real, adoptable capability for Booz Allen's federal cyber clients. You understand both worlds well enough to speak credibly in either direction.
You'll be the strategic and analytical engine of a team focused on the company's commercial-to-mission technology pipeline. That means developing the market and competitive intelligence that makes our VC and startup engagements substantive, working directly with business teams to shape cyber offerings and capabilities before they enter formal review processes, and producing the analysis and briefing materials that help senior leaders make faster, better-informed decisions about where to invest, partner, and position.
You won't be a process facilitator, you'll be a business partner. Where technical teams build, you'll shape and position. You'll work closely with delivery leads, capability owners, and the Disruption Cell to understand what the business is building and what the market actually needs, and you'll help close that gap.
What You'll Work On:
  • Commercial-to-mission pipeline: Maintaining a structured view of high-potential startups and technologies relative to Booz Allen's federal cyber priorities.
  • Market and competitive intelligence: Producing regular analysis of the commercial cyber landscape to inform partnership decisions, offering development, and VC engagement strategy.
  • Offering shaping: Working with business and delivery teams to develop the commercial rationale, positioning, and business case for cyber capabilities before they enter formal review.
  • VC and startup engagement support: Preparing substantive materials for meetings with venture partners and portfolio companies, ensuring engagements are analytically grounded.
  • Decision maker briefings: Translating complex market and competitive dynamics into clear, leadership-ready outputs that enable faster decision-making.

Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 5+ years of experience in strategy consulting, cyber product strategy, technology business development, or venture and startup ecosystem roles
  • Experience conducting market and competitive analysis in the cybersecurity domain, including synthesizing intelligence from VC activity, startup landscapes, and commercial product trends
  • Experience working with or alongside technical teams to translate capability concepts into commercial or go-to-market language
  • Experience developing deliverables for decision makers, such as strategy documents, briefings, market assessments, and investment or partnership rationales, with minimal supervision
  • Ability to operate across organizational boundaries and influence without direct authority, building credibility with both technical and business stakeholders
  • Ability to demonstrate cybersecurity expertise when engaging credibly with capability teams on topics such as zero trust, AI/ML-enabled security, offensive tooling, or endpoint and identity solutions
  • Ability to obtain a Secret clearance
  • Master's degree

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience with Booz Allen's internal innovation or offerings development processes, including with product and technology approval frameworks
  • Experience evaluating early-stage companies for partnership, investment, or acquisition potential
  • Experience supporting M&A diligence, partnership structuring, or venture engagement in a professional services or technology context
  • Knowledge of go-to-market strategy for government-focused cyber products or services
  • Knowledge of the federal cyber venture or startup ecosystem, such as Ballistic Ventures, ForgePoint, a16z, or equivalent
  • TS/SCI clearance

Clearance:
Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
