The Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic schools serve more than 40,000 students in 154 elementary and high schools in Cook and Lake counties. It is one of the largest private
school systems in the United States. Its schools have received 96 Blue Ribbon awards from the U.S. Department of Education over the past 10 years.
Position Summary
The School Custodian plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, secure, and welcoming environment for students, staff, families, and visitors. The custodian is responsible for daily cleaning and sanitization of school facilities, routine maintenance tasks, event setup and support, and assisting with seasonal projects to ensure the school remains in excellent condition throughout the year.
The School Custodian supports the mission of Most Blessed Trinity Academy by helping provide a safe, clean, welcoming, and faith-filled environment where students can learn, grow, and thrive academically, socially, and spiritually.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Cleaning and Sanitization
  • Clean, sanitize, and disinfect classrooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and common areas daily.
  • Replenish restroom and classroom supplies, including soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer.
  • Dust furniture, fixtures, vents, and equipment
  • Clean windows, doors, and other surfaces as assigned.
  • Perform deep cleaning during school breaks, holidays, and summer months
  • Summer Floor Waxing

Floor Care
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and maintain floors throughout the school.
  • Operate commercial floor equipment, including scrubbers, buffers, and polishers.
  • Strip, wax, and refinish floors during summer and holiday maintenance periods.
  • Maintain carpets and rugs through vacuuming and spot cleaning.

Waste Management
  • Empty trash and recycling containers throughout the facility.
  • Properly dispose of waste according to school and local regulations.
  • Maintain cleanliness around dumpsters and waste collection areas.

Event Setup and Support
  • Set up and take down tables, chairs, stages, and equipment for school events, assemblies, athletic activities, performances, meetings, and community functions.
  • Assist staff with room configurations and special event needs.

Safety and Security
  • Lock and unlock school buildings, classrooms, gates, and designated areas as assigned.
  • Conduct routine inspections of facilities to identify safety concerns.
  • Report hazards, maintenance issues, vandalism, or security concerns promptly.
  • Assist in maintaining compliance with school safety procedures and emergency protocols.

Building Maintenance
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance, including:
    • Changing light bulbs
    • Replacing ceiling tiles
    • Plunging toilets and addressing minor plumbing issues
    • Painting and touch-up work
    • Replacing hardware and fixtures
  • Assist outside contractors and vendors as needed.

Groundskeeping and Seasonal Duties
  • Assist with maintaining school grounds and exterior areas.
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, entrances, and parking areas when required.
  • Assist with landscaping, litter removal, and seasonal outdoor maintenance.
  • Support summer facility improvement projects.

Additional Duties
  • Assist with inventory and supply management.
  • Maintain cleaning equipment and report repair needs.
  • Support school administration with other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous custodial, maintenance, facilities, or related experience preferred.
  • Experience operating commercial cleaning equipment is desirable.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, products, and equipment.
  • Understanding of workplace safety standards and proper handling of cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Professional and respectful interaction with students, staff, families, and visitors.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and perform repetitive physical tasks for extended periods.

  • Ability to operate custodial and maintenance equipment safely.
